In our house Prince Philip is known as the Dook ( shades of John Wayne I think). :-D

Only women can be dowgers as their titles are through their husbands as was Queen Marys and the Queen Mother. Prince Phillip has not and could not become King on marrying the Queen as husbands do not become the same rank as their wives on marriage as wives do the other way round. Katherine and Meghan automatically became Princess's on marrying a Prince. Jack ? will not automatically become a Prince when he marries Princes Eugenie.

I don't think there needs to be a male version of a dowager at present but there might be in future now we have changed the order of succession.

Suffolk Vera, you are weird, that is the explanation!

Because yours will taste better. :-)

I have just been visiting my son and been eating roast lamb with home-made mint jelly, home-made redcurrant jelly and veggies from the garden. Delicious!

You can’t have too many dowagers is what I always say :-D. Is there a masculine version of dowager?

PS. Have your ears been burning Sharron? I have been chopping a great big bowlful of mint leaves, muttering to myself “I’m doing a Sharron”. All this effort for a couple of jars of mint sauce. Why don’t I just buy them at the supermarket like any normal person ? :-S

On the death of George Vth, as mother of the next two monarchs (Edward V111th and George V1th) Queen Mary technically became the Queen Mary the Queen Mother. She however, refused this title and remained HRH, or H.M Queen Mary till her death in 1953. The widow of George V1th only accepted the title of Queen Mother, because she and her daughter (the present Queen) shared the same christian name. Two Queen Elizabeth's would have been rather confusing to say the least! Queen Mary obviously had no such problem!

QEQM would have been a dowager as well wouldn't she?

We had quite a collection of them!

Think she was Queen Mary the dowager queen

I remember being in school and we were all summoned to the school main hall from our lesssons for our headmistress Miss Dyson to announce the news that the King had died

I have a vague recollection of her being Dowager Queen Mary. She died in March 1953 so didn’t have long to enjoy her new title.

EDIT. According to Wikipedia she was known just as Her Majesty Queen Mary

Queen Mary the Queen Grand Mother ?

Sharron Report 17 Aug 2018 13:34

When George Vl died and his daughter became Queen Elizabeth ll, his wife then became Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother because she was the mother of the reigning monarch.

However, the mother of the previous monarch was also still alive and she had been Queen Mary the Queen Mother,

So what did Queen Mary become?
