Apologies Elizabeth if I am starting to hi-jack your thread.

DetEcTive, I don't have "Internet Data Matches" on my drop down menu. Perhaps we have different versions. Mine is FH5.

I have played around with Search the Internet and think that might be useful. If I am using FH I usually have open sites that I am registered with and it might mean I can go straight to relevant entries without having to type in all the search boxes.

I have been very slack and haven't looked at the FHUG site for years. I probably had FH2 last time I looked. I've just been on their site and looked at Ancestral Sources - just reading the information, it looks quite complicated but often these things are easier to use than you would think from the instructions. I will look further into this when I have plenty of free time.

Elizabeth, don't let this put you off Family Historian. It is very easy to enter information and you can make it as simple or as complicated as you want.

Vera - that might explain it. Mines 6.2.
At least you've found the Search the Internet button. Hope it comes in useful for you.

How far back does 'Roots Magic' go?

I have always used something called Heritage because it was the first one I saw.

It must be pretty simple because I can use it (after a fashion!).

Hi Elizabeth

I use Roots Magic now and my OH finds it very good to use too (he is not really a computer person) It gives you hints and when you run a report tells you if you have married the son to his grandmother (which given they had the same name as the wife did happen). We are now on version 7.

I also have trees on Ancestry and Genes so i can find matches which is also useful. I am a bit of computer nut so i try out things to see what they are like.

Good luck with your trees which ever package you use.

I also have the Pen/pencil and paper sheets , we are running out of cupboard space after 25 years of work on the 2 family trees.

What's really hampered me on the paternal side of my tree is finding that

my name Irvine might appear on records as Ervin, Urvin, and others. :-S

Hi David Its happened to all of us

My husbands family one of his GGG's had 8 children - everone had a different spelling of their surname.

His Great Grandfather was Ebeneezer and said he was born in ken - we found him in Norfolk under Abanarza.

Its all good fun - makes you feel good when you do find them.

Dear Tabitha and John

Hello colleagues!

I have so many pieces of paper.

I can't even recall why I printed them out. :-S

Its time to get tough.......buy more folders!

No, seriously, all the packages suggested here sound very good.

I like it though if a genealogy package can tell you what relation the ancestor is to you, for example 5th cousins removed twice.

I am looking into these programmes and hope to get one very soon.

Until then back to the old fashioned method, A4 exercise book to make notes.

Happy researching.

Take gentle care

I use FTM

I have a couple of them 2007 on my old pc and the 2012 on my laptop because it wouldn't take the earler version

Both are synced with Ancestry. .i also did my ancestry DNA so have connected with others who share my DNA .

I like FTM and the reports etc you can print off

Wikitree has a facility built in shows relationships on tree members.

Hi Elizabeth

I tried out a few different ones before Rootsmagic came along and my husband loves it so much and he is not a tech person at all. We are now on Roots 7 and it has a on the go facility which means you can take your tree with you & use on your Tablet if you have the right connector. I have a surface with a USB so i can download the on to the go to a flash drive and show my in laws the latest tree info.

We love our reports and Rootsmagic is great as you can design your own report for whatever you are looking for. I dont know if it does relationships - i am sure i remember seeing it on the list.

This may help - i know there was something like this in one of the Family Tree magazines a few months ago too.

https://www.smarterhobby.com/genealogy/best-genealogy-software/

It gives all the Pros and cons and what program is good for what sort of tree

or this one

https://www.toptenreviews.com/software/home/best-genealogy-software/

I still have a house full of paper and a very large to do and look at file and another of emails and letters, as well as one for things that may be of use in the future.

Happy reading
