That rules me out then' Sharron.

However, now that I know what the 'slime' is I might try making some red or white wine vinegar if I ever find one again

I did the Wiki bit Allan but sometimes you learn more from somebody who knows about it from having done it.

If I ever need one now, I think I might know how to grow it.

Found this on the internet, Sharron

I have sometimes seen these things in our vinegar but didn't know what they were and hence threw the vinegar out thinking that somehow it had gone 'off'

I don't know if anybody else on here dabbles with odd things to eat but I wonder if anybody might know about this.

I have been saving the vinegar from the pickled beetroot I eat far too much of, hoping I might find a use for it.

Not finding any inspiration, quite a large quantity of sweetish, pink vinegar was jettisoned today. A couple of the jars had jelly like discs on top of them and, as they washed away down the pan, it occurred to me that I might just have flushed away two vinegar mothers.

Does anybody on here know anything about them?
