I do not see how anyone has the RIGHT to be shown a tree owned by someone else .................

and no-one who has a tree on here HAS to open their tree to anyone else if they do not wish to do so.

I do not, for one, and I know many others who also do not open their trees.

However, it is usual to reply to anyone who sends a proper request ........ ie, not the auto-generated, very curt "open you tree", which most of us ignore.

Kyle ..........

have you checked your sent messages to see whether the other person has even opened it?? If there is a green envelope to the left of the name, then it has not been opened.

EDIT:- As Kense said, this part of my post refers to a second post by Kyle that use not only "rather nasty language" about Caroline, but some vile comments about her .......... language not seen before in my memory on this site.
- - - - - - - - - - -

I'm asking again because you did not reply to the original question when it was asked, you just went on an unwarranted harangue against someone who was trying to help you by explaining what must have happened.

Not a good way to get started with us!!!

"sounds like they're just a name grabber."

Can see how you got confused though!! :-)

Caroline Report 12 Nov 2018 17:18

Yeah don't worry I'll not lose sleep over it. I would RR them but let's let everyone see the response, then maybe they'll not rush to help in future.....can't work out why someone didn't want contact though......

Good luck Kyle.

Kyle you need to apologise to Caroline about your loathsome remarks.
She did actually say that the other person was a name grabber and she didn't imply that you were the name grabber.

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 12 Nov 2018 16:51

Kyle, Caroline wasn’t referring to you. She meant the person known as Peasinapod.
Many members refer to people who add unrelated people as Name Collectors. There’s nothing wrong with that in itself as long as they’ve followed up with their own confirmation research.

It is against GR’s T&C to add names of living, or expected to be living, people without their permission (see post at 16:42)

Anyway, it sounds as if you are making progress to rectify the situation. I don’t think you necessarily ‘have the right’ to view their family tree. Does that ‘right’ fall under more recent legislation?

For Caroline

“If you add the names of living individuals to your family tree you must have their permission. We reserve the right (at our own discretion) to remove any personal data which you have included in your family tree about people who are living if we are alerted to the fact that this personal data was used without that person’s permission.”

Kense Report 12 Nov 2018 16:07

(EDIT: The post to which this refers has been reported and will probably be deleted. The poster had assumed Caroline was referring to her, took exception to that and replied with a post containing rather nasty comments about Caroline.)

Kyle, that's an unwarranted attack on Caroline. I don't think you read her post correctly, she didn't call you a name grabber.

There is a bug in GR such that with a little patience the essentials of most stored trees can be teased out inc LR thus obviating the need to contact passed on or uncommunicative members.

You can choose to 'hide' living relatives from anyone actually viewing your tree, but those same living relatives will show up as being in your tree if anyone does a 'search all member trees'.

Caroline

Caroline Report 12 Nov 2018 14:13

Actually anyone can put anyone on their tree, and it's your choice whether to hide living relatives I'm pretty sure. They don't have to allow anyone access to view, so the only way you'd know they had your whole family on their tree is if you looked at every person and saw the little star with possible tree matches in it.
It's sad but no one has to share, sounds like they're just a name grabber.

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 12 Nov 2018 12:14

Welcome to the boards, Kyle.

When you say 'won't talk to you' do you mean you've tried to make contact via Genes & they haven't replied? Check your 'Sent Messages' box on this site to see if there's an envelope icon next to the message. That means it hasn't been accessed.
Unfortunately, for active members, dormant accounts are never removed by GR.
This may be the case here - the tree owner has died, become too frail or just lost interest.

They shouldn't have added your name, or those of anyone likely to be living, without the person's permission.

If Peasinapod refuses (or is unable) to remove your name, you can request GR to do it on your behalf.

Email them at [email protected]

No one can 'force' one member to talk to another. Try messaging them again. Don't use the Auto-fill ' Please may I see your tree'. That could have put them off. Explain who you are and ask how they are related to you. You could also politely ask them to remove the names of your known living family.

Caroline

Caroline Report 12 Nov 2018 12:06

You can't! No one on here is forced to share details and quite frankly sounds like you shouldn't bother with them.
