Our milkman is paid by cheque left out with the empty bottles after he / she has left a monthly bill.
A couple of weeks ago, on a separate day they left a hand signed Christmas card. I later left one out for them with a tip enclosed. Although I never have seen them, I can rely on the milk being there by the step on delivery days.

I tip the hairdresser and used to tip the postman, when the same one regularly called, but now it can be anyone and at any time, often after 1 p.m so I don't tip them any more.
Likewise I used to tip the binmen, when it was a regular team.

In restaurants I would tip for good service, but like Ann not on a card payment.

I tip at the hairdressers if the younger girl does it, although I know it goes in a pot. I don't normally tip because the girl who does my hair owns two salons and is probably better off than us.
Refuse collectors, no don't tip these days, used to when we knew them, don't jhave a milkman, postman is never the same. Used to tip until he retired a few years ago, Always tip in restaurants except places like Wetherspoons. But never tip on the Ccard in restaurants as it doesn't go to the waitresses.

The only people we’ll tip are the hairdresser, taxi driver on the rare occasions we use them & sometimes restaurant food servers. Even with the latter we have a difference of opinion. OH believes they shouldn’t have to rely on tips as part of their salary.

In our early married years, we were probably earning less than the milkman, postie & refuse collectors. Although it’s expected, I feel awkward tipping the hairdresser & taxi driver. It smacks of patronage.

We always give the binmen a box of lagers and a box of cokes as they are very good and always take our hedge trimmings in summer - above and beyond really as we have a high beech hedge right round the house and there can sometimes be around 25/30 bags of clippings!!

Give the post lady some sort of chocs and the milkman we give a bit extra to when he collects his money just before Christmas, same with the window cleaner.

They are all very appreciative because I don't think many people round here still do this but we have since we moved in almost 50 years ago.

Well if I have my hair done, I always tip my hairdresser and send a card to the salon. ive been there for over 15 years and they always treat you well.

As for the postie, bin men etc well...we all work hard at our jobs but we don't get tips! Not feeling mean at all but...

If I went out for a meal which isn't often and I felt the service was really excellent and the food equally, then I would leave something for a tip.

Is it a thing of the past?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-46620012.

I don't see the binmen, milkman or postie usually.
Milkman or lady? delivers milk in the middle of the night, often before 2 a.m..
