The clue may be in ... smelling like rotten sheep. Googling rotten sheep may bring something to the fore. (As long as it's not the smell.). :-0

Popped back as I recall that in Far from the Madding Crowd, Gabriel's sheep were bloated and in danger of dying before he released the gas from their stomachs. I think I've got the right Hardy novel. Also I think there was similar in a James Heriot episode.

Gotta go. Night night. <3 :-D

Captain Dan's descendants who transcribed the memoirs later got a lot of it wrong.
They said his father (my 3x G.Grandfather Evan) fought in the American War of Independence. He wasn't born then. But the facts fit the Anglo-American War of 1812

look what I found

Tetanus (lockjaw) Tetanus is a disease caused by Clostridium tetani, an organism commonly found in the soil. It is much more prevalent on farms where horses have been kept. ... The organism can infect sheep through wounds from shearing, docking, castration, or vaccination.

He was a very lucky man surviving loads of diseases shipwrecks etc. Not like his brothers who nearly all died young or at sea or both.

Although his little girl died after she fell into the hold of his ship while they were docked in Liverpool :-( :-(
