My Dad used to make miles of French Knitting when on nights at his job, then would twist it into a bedside mat for us. He made rag rugs too, he was very resourceful.

this was the 4 day sleeper train, and the French "spool" doesn't require you to have a lot of elbow room ......... space taken up is more like that when crocheting.

But I was intrigued to see that the size of "spool" she was using plus the thick yarn meant that she could open the tube that the thing makes and that her friend could then slip her foot and leg into the tube.

The ones we all, I think, used when we were children were made from a wooden cotton thread spool, with (for me) nails hammered part way in by Dad, usually 4 but could be 6. The tube made was very narrow, and we used to have to twist a long length round on itself to make a flat circle, stitching it into place. There was a drink mat for your Dad!


The official name now is French Spool Knitting ........ some of us used to call it corking I think?

You couldn't do that on British trains - not enough elbow space and with the price of tickets it is cheaper to go out and buy a pair from Harrods and charter a private jet.

A young woman on the train at Christmas had a large one of those things, plus very thick yarn (not sure if it was wool or a mix) .......... in 4 days she made a pair of leg warmers for her friend :-0

I have recently bought one of those French knitting implements that have superceded the cotton reel and four brads of my youth.

There are places behind cooker knobs and cupboard handles that accumulate great dollops of God knows what that is hard to remove so I have made a length of French knitting from the dishcloth cotton I always have as my Valium because I thought I might be able to kind of floss them in all those awkward places.

It must surely be knob floss!
