Fortunately I had nothing in my hands when I heard a news reporter on the national news last night describe a situation as 'fairly unique' :-|

Surely something is either unique or it isn't.

Mind you, the way my eyesight is, I would probably have missed hitting the screen anyway :-D

Bobtanian Report 4 Aug 2020 22:48

maybe he was dicksleskic???

and meant fairly unusual....

oh no, thats Tom Jones...

Allan

Allan Report 4 Aug 2020 22:57

Well it's not unusual

"barely audible, to the eye"

Turn a deaf eye to all this nonsense.

My husband also complains quite loudly about that Allan, I just groan inwardly when I hear it.

Perhaps people should go back to basics when teaching English and explain how to use a dictionary to find the meaning of words and using them correctly. :-S

Just been shopping for the first time since early March and saw a sign in a shop ( beautifully laid out and printed ) saying that they respectively ask us to wear masks and keep apart. I was tempted to say thank you respectfully!

I agree Allan and so does OH. We both cringe when people say unique with a qualifying adverb. Take your choice - quite, fairly, very, etc. etc.

Island

Island Report 5 Aug 2020 15:09

super.... :-0

I saw some fabric samples online, rather pale and twee for my liking so why am I told they are 'stunning' ? Why is 'stunning' overused these days and mostly in the wrong context?
I'll decide if I'm stunned thanks.

Andysmum

Andysmum Report 5 Aug 2020 16:48

And exciting!! Everything is "new, improved and exciting". New - yes, improved - unlikely, exciting - NO!! :-|

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 5 Aug 2020 19:28

How can a product be both New, AND improved(as in a well known shampoo)

its the old product that is improved...~(and not always for the best, in my opinion)

"New" should mean what it implies.....

Island

Island Report 5 Aug 2020 20:00

It's because new and improved means it's uniquely stunning Bob

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 5 Aug 2020 20:20

Ah!!

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 5 Aug 2020 20:24

So how should I describe my exposed countenance????

if and when when I finally have a shave...

when Covid took hold I said that I wasn't going to shave until either, it was beaten,

or it beat me, in which case they could burn it off.....

seeing as how it is only 20 something weeks till Christmas....

Cornish Susie,

I remember something similar happening, albeit verbally, at a place where I worked.

It was coming up to lunch time and my boss turned to me and said, "thank goodness it's nearly time for lunch, I feel ravishing"

I just turned to him and said "Well, you don't do much for me!" and walked away.

He was either cracking on to me or he meant that he was feeling ravenous

:-D :-D

Perhaps I have been watching a tad more telly lately but I can see I'm not the only one who has found more howlers than usual.

I now raise a cheer (or perhaps just a little smile) for anyone who can pronounce the word 'sixth' properly.

SIcth seems to be growing in popularity so much it seems to be overtaking sixth, but I have to say that it irks me a little when news reporters can't even get it right.

Why the Ozzies are smashing up their tvs

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2020/may/13/why-are-australians-smashing-their-tvs-and-what-does-it-have-to-do-with-5g-and-coronavirus

6th sense -tongue at the back of the top teeth
the French cannot pronounce "clothes" it is so funny to hear them try
Most of the English cannot say le cru (crane) or le grenouille (frog)
neither (Arabic) can they say "al dhub" (lizard)

I cannot see why Australians buy a tv in the first place the programming is dire - Neighbours is supposedly quality. Sport you may so. No, they watch that in bars. BBC/ITV have spotted a gap in the market with their new product "BritBox". Most of the classic comedy with an updated version of Spitting Image.

No country gets along very well with covid but Australia is temperamentally, totally unable to cope with it for months on end. Hence the flare ups.

Fanos fans are going to be a boon to television manufacturers and dealers. I bet they're rubbing their hands in glee. :-D

My local deli, had a sign in the window advertising for a “ part time person”. It didn’t stipulate what they had to be the rest of the time - werewolf, vampire? Who knows!

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 6 Aug 2020 10:24

From my gathered-over-the-years knowledge, I can think of a few who'd fit that bill, Linda. :-0 :-D
