Rubbish piling up!

Was listening on R2 earlier about the rubbish piling up in the streets of Brighton & Hove area. Some people were saying rats were tearing open food bags and the smell is just awful.

No collections now for 10 days.
Its because the collectors are in talks about poor wages etc & a lack of drivers.

This is an enviromental heath hazard and should not be allowed to happen.

I do know in kent, collections of garden waste have been suspended due to lack of lorry drivers and they prioritised which was the least harmful. So food waste & recycling was the most important and garden waste wasnt.

I mean surely something has to be done? The smell of rotting food at the back of restaurants or just on the pavements outside private houses is sickening...literally!!

To make life worse I don’t think some of the local councils have been weeding the streets.

There is long history of disputes locally with the refuse collectors and council.

Some of the pictures I saw a few weeks ago showed more weed than tarmac/ paving stone. Very difficult to walk the streets I would think.

In many areas, refuse collection has been contracted out to sub-contractors.
We had 'Serco' for a couple of years - their contract wasn't renewed. :-|
