Our house is was built 1981/82, it was a council then, we bought it 1988 and about 2 or 3 months ago we discovered a leak into the attic, the chap that looked at it and said that all those years ago the job was never done properly so do you think it will be with me telling the council all these years later?

Not worth it. I assume when you bought it your surveyor checked everything, especially if you had a mortgage on it. Hope it is not an expensive job.

The house is 40 years old - who knows how the wind, rain etc has affected the roof or chimney. These things happen but it may be worth a try getting your insurance to pay for any damage but they are quite likely to claim it is normal wear and tear.

Definitely not worth it , when you buy a house from the council or private it is down to you to get a surveyor to check that the house is in good condition for the price you are paying. Like names says check with the insurance but most likely wear and tear.
We brought our house in the 80s and our roof wasn't covered by insurance for repair when we had a leak due to breakdown of the flashing around the chimney.

Hope it isn't to big a job.

Nameslessone, It wasn't done properly when it was built and 2 surveyors didn't see it either, also the insurance say it is wear and tear, so hubby will be paying.
