But how far back do we need to go before someone is considered an ancestor?

One definition of the word says further back than your grandparents.

Interesting question-made me think a bit. I believe anyone you are descended from is your ancestor so that would include your parents as well.

An ancestor is really anyone you are related to starting with your parents.

Ancestor, descendant, relation just about the same meaning really

Ancestors are the people you are descended from, descendants are your children and so on.

So you are a descendant of your grandfather and he is your ancestor.

grannyfranny yes, sorry, I think that came out all wrong! Think me brain meant all 3 are linked in that are all related but different from the actual meaning as you explained!
