If it is acceptable to have a photo taken of a grade listed building, it is one that my family lived in many years ago.

Presumably it is not a public building, therefore you may need the owners permission.

However, if it is listed there might well be a photo somewhere on the net, so try googling,

I don’t think there is any law in England that prevents you taking photos of a building. Unless maybe it is one covered by the official secrets act such as a military base. Look how many photos are taken of buildings in London. If it is a private house and you would be in their face taking it. It might be polite to ask. However if you were to stand further down the road and take a view of the road with the building in it I am sure nobody would say anything.

I was told in a photography class that you were ok to photograph anything that could be seen from a public space, although AnninGlos makes a good point about military bases. I would avoid those as it could look suspicious. I have photographed listed buildings from the road before, but don't step onto private land. You could perhaps ring a photography company to confirm it/be sure.
