How many members do you think GR have lost?

Too many, good members not enough of the trouble makers. What I think a lot of people forget is one bad bit of press loses more than what one bit of good press gets. Yes GR have a lot of members, but how many are paid members? I whould imagine that number is dropping. I will be renewing when my membership runs out, but only so I can keep having a go at the WUMS that I see, and also report their threads before they get chance to delete their nasty posts. |

Someone mentioned the other day that Genes is losing money. I'm not sure where that information came from or even if it's accurate. If it is though, one would think that Genes would be looking to deal with whatever might be remotely causing them financial grief, even the possibility of the antics on the General Board keeping customers away. It may be a very tiny ripple in a very big ocean but I suspect that it's haveing a far wider effect than most people imagine. I think Genes is being so short-sighted they're virtually blind. |

Well they lost me for one.. I did not renew my membership at the beginning of october, purely becuase of the idiotic, snide and pathetic antics of a certain element on here. Hubby works away now, so i thought i would waste his membership time ( May next year) to keep sticking my oar in at any opportunity to annoy the little group of misery makers , and to expose their every attempt to bully other good members on here.. and to be here for others who need help when confronted by the silly little twerps that have tried to oust every decent person on this site. I stopped pussyfooting and being diplomatic a while back, lets just say, like my membership, my patience has run out! |

I've belonged on here for 4 years though I only started using the message boards fairly recently. I seem to miss seeing the nastiness or I must be ignoring threads that later turn nasty. For me this site has been the best way to make contacts and I have been able to gain a lot from belonging. I also enjoy helping when I can. I've no intention of leaving. How can anyone ever finish their tree by the way? I'm never going to be able to get all of mine. Sue |

Lynda, still working in it, but at the moment its causing me a headache. I've also got a few friends looking at it as well. They are programmers for a company down here. So hopefully should be able to get most if not all of the data recovered. |

I think a big question is, How many REAL members did Genes have? Many I am sure just visited long enough to register add themselves, and never to be seen again... 5 million trees implies 5 million members.............I think that is a vast over estimate of genuine genes personnel...........Bob |

Still don't know why they are called floppies when they are not. The older ones are but the newer ones are not. |

Hello Susan I keep saying that I've nearly finished my tree (I don't expect to go back as far as some) however, this board always slows me down. lol. It distracts me when I should be doing my family tree or housework lol |

I used to look in on the site a couple of times each day. Now I just have a look in once every couple of days. Since ITV bought the site it's been downhill all the way. Don't know how many have left, but come March when my membership expires I'll be gone also. Alan |

It's very strange how online groups get close, then bitter arguments and squabbles break out. It's hard to imagine how people who have never met and who really can't say they know much about each other, manage to bicker like children. I saw a crafts group which collapsed and now just a few people meet up online and I belong to a medieval genealogy group where it sometimes gets really nasty. It shouldn't really be up to anyone at GR to monitor us........we aren't children. If people want to leave or feel they must then I respect their opinions but I for one would like to see this site survive and prosper. Enough of us need to stay here so we can go on connecting our families. We are all related.....we just haven't worked out how. If most of us stay and carry on helping and sharing then this will continue to be a worthwhile site to belong to. Let's try to ignore any troublemakers. We feed into their egos everytime they successfully get a quarrel going. Sue |

That's very true, Sue. I'm sure though, that there are enough new people joining the site and enough people avoiding the General board and concentrating on the other parts of the site for it to continue. It's just such a shame that so many familiar and lovely people who contributed to the General board in so many positive ways are missing and that the board now holds so little interest for so many. Certainly there is much that is new, but there is mourning for that which has been lost. |

I think if only one person leaves a community such as this because they feel the board is being mismanaged, it is one too many. If people leave because they are disillusioned it is, as Felicity says, a small ripple on a large ocean but if those people leave because they feel impotent fury at the way the community to which they belong is being eroded, then that small ripple becomes a mighty wave in terms of reputation. I agree with Stu. Even a hint of bad press can do more harm to a business than any amount of good advertising can promote it. Complacency is the pit into which many a good business falls. There may be a tiny percentage of people that are currently dissatisfied and it may be thought that that number is insignificant and can be ignored but stains on a business's reputation have a habit of spreading if not dealt with timeously.
