I racked my brains over this - we sang it in and out of season for the nine years of my school life. Anywhere, he's the full poem.

Sentimental Rendezvous.

In a quaint old chateau garden stands a shepherdess of carven stone,
And over by a sleeping fountain stands a little shepherd all alone,
But when moonlight floods the alleys and the nightingale sings all night through
They waken and they meet together in a sentimental rendezvous.

“Ah, my love, at last we meet!”
“Oh shepherd mine speak lower, I entreat,”
“There’s none to hear me oh my sweet. How the nightingale above
Is singing, dearest, of our love; will you dance with me, my love?”
Softly plays the moonlit fountain, making music in the lonely spot,
As shepherdess and shepherd mingle in the paces of an old gavotte,
And the little marble cupid laughs to see the lovers dancing so
And keeping to the quaint old rhythm he is beating with his broken bow.

When one o’clock is tolled their hour of magic love is over,
Their arms must now unfold; and love turn marble cold.
Through the garden goes the shepherd, stepping ever where the shadows fall,
The shepherdess is left all lonely on her little marble pedestal,
And the gardener in the morning passes by the two and never knows,
The little shepherd now is holding fast the shepherdesses marble rose.

From my wife's memory of her mother singing this. It comes up from very deep feelings

As much as I can remember:

'In a quaint old chateau garden stood a shepherdess of carven stone
And over by the sleeping fountain stood a little shepherd all alone.
But when moonlight floods the allees and the nightingale begins to sing
They waken and they meet together in a sentimental rendezvous.
"O my love, at last we meet." "O shepherd mine, speak lower, I entreat"
"There's none to hear, my sweet. Will you dance with me my love."

bit muddled here
......dancing? treading? ever where the shadows fall
Over by the sleeping fountain keeping to the .....? measure
..?cupid beating with his broken bow

But one o'clock is tolled. Their hour of magic life is over
Their arms must now unfold and love turn marble cold.

a bit missing here?
And the gardener on the morrow passes by the two and never knows
The little shepherd now is holding fast the shepherdess's marble rose.'

Hi Rosemary I have tried a search on the net and only come up with a brief reference to it on one site, where they quote the first two lines, much as you have them. I sounds fascinating, wish we could find more In a quaint old chateau garden - stands a shepherdess of carven stone. And over by the sleeping fountain, is a little shepherd, all alone....' Dee x

I am trying to remember the words of In a quaint old chateaux garden there's a shepherdess of carven stone and over by the sleeping fountain there's a shepherd standing all alone ... In the middle of the night they come alive and dance together but in the morning they have to return to stone and when the gardener comes he does not notice that the shepherd is now holding the shepherdess's rose,Please does anyone know of this song???
