GranOfOzRubySlippers Report 22 Oct 2008 12:21

Hi Claddah, the blackbird we have a problem with is an introduced species, the male has an orange/reddish beak and is black the female has a yellow beak and is a dusty brown. They killed nine of my chickens last year, by going through a hole in the back of the nests used as vents. They did not even eat them just killed them. They start hanging around in the spring.

A currawong is bigger than our magpies, they are an ugly bird, have bright yellow eyes. They are all black with white under the wing and very much scavengers. I do not like them as they pick on every bird that comes in the yard. They are really smart as well, after hunting them from the yard for many years, they now sit in the trees in the neighbours yard, it is like they are watching you.

Paul, doctors are all the same. It is best if you take someone else in with you, then you have a witness. I learnt this the hard way. Unfortunately, you cannot record with out permission. So make sure you have another person with you when you have the review.

Elaine, good to hear you are able to see your hubby this evening, thanks to your kind sil. Will be thinking of him this friday.

Ann, have always loved cows and pigs since staying on a farm in Millstreet, Ireland as a young teenager. They give me a warm, comfortable feeling.Only once was I a bit scared of the large sow called Queeny, when she had piglets, and got a bit grumpy when I stroked her.

Gail, have never heard of a rogue blackbird before.Have seen some fighting each other though recently, and, witnessed some scaring away a buzzard from their nest. That took courage.
What are currawongs?

To all I have not mentioned, have a lovely day, as stress-free as possible.

xx

Hi Elaine, so please you get to see him today. You will be glad come Friday and the op is over. SIL sound great.

Have been with my chickens again today, have to guard them from hawks and a nasty blackbird we have around here. All the currawongs are gone for the year. I have magpies and butcher birds but they never worry about the chickens, though have seen them catch mice.

Very cold here today, 10 C when I got out of bed this morning, and it snowed 20 kilometres from here. So a bit chilly for this time of year.

Love and hugs to all

Gail

Hi all,

Carole. wow, what a holiday that will be, hope you have a great time.

Eileen hi, sorry I haven't been in touch, and Gail, love the sound of the chickens and the baby ones fighting over the grub lol
Elaine, my cousin with a pacemaker is on warfarin and they always have her in early to check her out when she needs anything done.
Caz, hope you soon feel better, and Sqwirrel, hope you are ok.

I didn't get to see Jules and Pat as I woke up earlyish on Monday with an upset tum, back and forth to the loo for a few hours so haven't done much at all, had to text Jules and say I couldn't catch up with them and not sure there will be another chance this visit, sadly.

Hope I can catch up with some of the things I need to do today and tomorrow.

Carole, how lovely, what a holiday to look forward to, wonderful to meet family you didn't know you had.

Caz, pleased to see you on here again, i hope these tablets get you sorted out this time. Elaine, getting your hubby in early is good as he will be looked after and ready for his op. They will be monitoring him because of the warfarin. when our friend was on warfarin he had to go to the pharmacist to check every time he bought medicine over the counter and couldn't even take cough medicine.

Gail, love the thought of mummy chicken heading for OH's young sprouts, she knows a good thing when she sees it obviously.

Eilen, chickens maybe but cows and pigs??? No thanks.

Hi gill hope you are OK.

In 1912 my grandfathers brother Arthur, left England for Canada. From there he went to Michigan, my uncle told me, as he showed me a photo of his Uncle Arthur. In the photo with him was a woman holding a baby. These two's names were unknown to everyone here. No more information was available from anyone. I searched for family in America, and found someone looking for what looked like it could be my family. After a couple of emails I sent the photo I had. Back came the reply, "I screamed out loud as I have that photo above my computer, the baby is my mom". So a couple more emails and I got the message I'm coming to England! So two second cousins of mine came to visit, and on Nov 1st, my oh and I are going to meet my second cousin again, her father who is in his eighties ( my mums first cousin.) They live in Ohio. So we fly to Chicago, then to Detroit, there my second cousin and her husband will meet us, and drive to Ohio.
Having 12 days away.

Hello all, thought I would let you know Chris changed my tablets this morning, she said just by looking at me she could tell they weren't doing me any good. I haven't read the thread yet so don't know what's been happening, in fact the last week is a kind of blur when I think of it. Hopefully I can stay awake during the day, and get rid of the shaking and sickness, that was horrible.
I will be back when I feel more like myself.

Love and hugs to all

Lucky you Gail, I am jealous.I agree with you, chickens are great fun, very soothing too.
I actually love the sound of a cock crowing.Million times nicer than the sound of traffic, or, even worse, fireworks, especially the ones that they call bombs over here.
If it were possible, I would love to have a cow and pig, as well as chickens. The smell of cows is almost soporific, pigs make me laugh, and are very clean & intelligent too.Ah well, we have to be able to dream...

Eileen, they are a lot of fun, some areas around here will not allow chickens either. Some that do allow them do not allow roosters.

My place is semi rural so I can have what I like. But we have good neighbours and I keep them sweet with fresh eggs.

Twinkle, do not fret, if on warfrin this is normal. MIL is on it and has to jump through hoops just to have a tooth removed.

He will be okay and it is good that they care enough to get him in early.

Take care

Hi Gail,

It seems strange that you say you are off to bed, when the sun is shining it's little heart out here.

I love chickens, especially the ones with long, sort of furry underpants.
We woudn't be allowed to have chickens here, more's the shame.

GranOfOzRubySlippers Report 20 Oct 2008 14:53

Just off to bed and thought I would say hello.

It has been just a beautiful day here in OZ. But we have a cold front moving in so no need to start throwing things at the monitor.

My chickens are lovely and waiting on some hatching this week. They had their first run around the yard this weekend, and mum took them straight to OH newly sprouted carrots, he was none too pleased. So now have them confined in a run for when I let them out. So funny, mum found a grub for them and one got it then another, they played tag with it for 1/2 hour.

Seems everyone wants chickens this year, and so far will not have enough to go around. So far up to 30 hens and 5 roosters ordered. So somebody will miss out if more chickens do not go broody. Will be a fun summer with lots of chickens.

Love and hugs

Gail

Wishing you and your hubby well for tomorrow. Maybe the doctors are being extra careful because of him being on Warfarin.

Take care.
