The Black Watch, Edinburgh Castle 1850's/60

I am wondering if anyone can advise me. Family folk lore says that an ancestor was in the Black Watch and I have found Helen Marriott who was born in Edinburgh in about 1861. She has a brother John also said to have been born in Edinburgh so am assuming some truth in what is said. However Mother in Law couldn't remember any names.
I have located their Mother. Mary Vincent who lived in Glastonbury Somerset but cannot trace their father. He does not appear on Helen's Marriage certificate or Johns service records. Nor have i been able to find a previous marriage for Mary Vincent who at the time of her daughter's marriage was married to James Vincent ,a Tailor.
Is it possible to view lists of serving soldiers?

I don't see the birth of a Helen / Ellen / similar Marriott (or alternative spelling) (or Vincent) anywhere in Scotland 1850-70, per ScotlandsPeople.

The nearest I can find is this one - mistranscription isn't uncommon:
But I'm NOT particularly suggesting this is your Helen:

HERRIOT
HELEN
F
1861
681/ 45
Crichton (Midlothian)

Where have you "found" Helen and John?
I don't see them on any census.

Have you found Mary and James on a census?

Do you mean that Mary's maiden surname was Marriott?
Or was she a Vincent who married a Vincent?

When did Helen marry -- and who did she marry? Where?

This James Vincent is a tailor in Glastonbury, and married to a Mary - but it's 1841 - 20 years before Helen's supposed birth, so I assume this is not the right couple ?

Another thread about this family, on Find Ancestors:

Please stick to one thread, Sylvia, to save helpers duplicating research, as has already happened.

EDIT:

Best to stick to the Find Ancestors thread, as there are now more replies there than on this one.
