5am!! Good heaven's, you MUST be keen Anne. :-D

You'll be shattered later. Make sure you get a good rest....you deserve it. Hope your weekend goes well.

Have a good trip Sylvs ~~~~~~~ come back safely.

Oh Sue, I wish it were the first day of Spring here.....I love Spring but dislike Autumn :-(

Am beginning to get concerned about our Frank. Even if he has been away, it's seems ages since he was here.

Love to all. Cx

Hi Reece....battling with ivy eh? She gets everywhere doesn't she? :-D
Glad you are getting someone in to help with your garden - it can be such hard work at times.

Life before TV? Hmm. I can just about remember it. The first programmes I can remember are Noddy, The Flowerpot Men and Muffin the Mule.......lol

Moving on half a century and more......I had my free eye test today. All well, just the normal ageing process apparently. I was told that, just as our bodies change shape, so do our eyes. I think I must have pear shaped eyes by now then!!!! lol :-D :-D

Hi everyone

Boy is it pouring down today ,everything is flooded.

Sylvia have a good trip ,we have the first day of Spring today but it still feels like Winter to me ...I hope the rain continues for a while yet.

Spent yesterday at the Mother in Laws, myself and the Sister in Law go to MIL's house every three months or so and have a good clean through ,she is 91 this birthday and things do get a bit out of hand for her.

We are trying to keep her in her own home for as long as possible, even though she is not my Mother I do care about her ,she has been good to me since I lost my own Mother in 1981.

Lots of events are taking place at the moment ,another of our Grandchildren is going for there Licence to Drive .
Just another one to worry about on the roads ,you can teach them everything you know but there will always be some idiot that may hurt them so we worry.

Anne it was nice to see the others pop in ,don't feel to bad I forget things all the time and I am only 60......61 on the 13th of Sept.
The Oh has his 60th on Sat and Fathers day on Sunday ,I still don't know what to do for him yet.
Possibly a nice Chinese meal but then that will be my treat He! He! He!.....Off to try and put some washing on the line and then get dinner.

Pop in tonight.
Don't work to hard Anne you make me feel tired.
Enjoy your lay in tomorrow.

Love to everyone

Bon Voyage Sylvia - have a nice break

Well here we are again - 5amish - very dark again - no Seagull friends around to keep me company - I did see a fox on my way to work this morning.

Well it looks like today may just be - "One of those days" for some reason I seem to be runnung late today for everything (I know & it has only just started) rushing around the house - knew i was going to forget something - anyway set off in the car at 4:45 to get here - halfway to work & it suddenly occured to me - something was missing - no handbag on lap - OMG left it at home :-P :-\

Without a handbag I can't even gain access to the office - let alone open the locked drawers etc - so we had to do a u turn at the park - & drive back with OH having a good mutter - dashed in - no handbag in usual place - found it eventually in very unusual place & rushed off - OH still muttering - got here at 4:55 dashed in - switiched on pc & logged in to phone - all ready to start work at 4:58 Phew.

If it started like that then whats the rest of the day going to be like.

Seagulls have woken up now - not sure about me.

I have a lie in tomorrow & a half day - then we are packing as off to the outlaws for the weekend :-0 :-0 :-0 :-0

Wonder what joys lay in wait for us this time

It was lovely to see the missing ones drop by - even only briefly - now Sylvia is deserting us again.

Well off to search the boards & have a browse in peace & quiet.

Take care all ;-) <3 ;-) <3 ;-) <3

Hello friends,

One of the "missing" ....pops back. Anne, Cynthia, Sylvia, Susan and all thank you for all the kind words and hugs and I return them to you with great affection.

Not a lot happening - enjoyed a day out to Audley End but time spent mostly battling with " ivy " on he garden fence - it is pulling the fence post over so now must be deal with. I've done some, gardener some more and now I must employ bigger, stronger MEN to do the job! Heaven knows what the recycling team will think this morning when they come to empty all the bags! Then anice Spanish man is coming to repair and straighten the lovely old wooden fence (there is a lot of it, too) so everyone says.

Yes, have found some more relatives but have found a soldier late 1700's and can't work out if he is related or not. Some others have his children in our tree but they don't belong there. I have him and his family in 3 census returns but I think now I must send off for his marriage certificate.

Just reading about Window Taxes - goodness me!

Family are back from France - school starts next week - older grand daughter goes on to "middle school" and she is feeling a bit apprehensive but is going with several friends from babyhood so should fit right in in no time.

I'm going through cupboards - just moving "things from one room to the next" before deciding "who might like them or where to next".

Cynthia, my sister is suffering with Parkinsons - has great difficulty speaking now - I fear each phone call will be the last. So cruel as she loved talking, too.

Enough, so love to you all wherever you are.

Well 5am on a very dark - slightly humid morning only me & the seagulls & my early morning cleaner - the nights team are upstairs - takes too much effort to move all my things for a couple of hours - trying to find a pc that works to my set up & I do like being here in the peace & quiet (well till the hoover starts or the air recirculator.

Sylvia - sounds a great time growing up in that sort of background - I remember Oldham -my friend lived in Heywood near Rochdale. I had some great times up there in the 70's.

When you look back you realise how much it has all changed.

Wouldn't our grandparents be shocked at the price of things these days.

I can remember saving my pocket money to buy a paperback book which cost 2s &6p - thats 12p in decimal - then the cost rose to 25p (shock horror) & gradually crept up to 75p (so did my pocket money).

Now you are lucky to find a new one in Smiths for under £6.

Asda have 3 for £10 but not a great choice. I miss sussex stationers or British bookshop as they were later called - you could get the new ones for half price. Probably why they went bust.

I do love my books. Have toyed with the idea of a Kindle - but waiting for them to reduce in price - books still cost the same & you can't pass them on to people - think they woudl be a boon when going on holiday - a lot less luggage & weight. Wonder if there is a kind fairy out there who could buy me one for my birthday.

Don't really have many people left now to get birthday cards from - OH & I don't bother with cards as we have our birthday on the same day - I agree with him seems a bit pointless - we don't do pressies either - as he said if he wants to buy me something he will do it when he wants to - not because its the day you should.

Well rabbiting away again over nothing really -

I agree wholeheartedly with Cynthia - its great to have friends - one you can discuss anything & everything with - share things with & just ramble on & on with.

I love this thread & the people on it - long may it last.

Love & hugs to all the missing ones ((((((((~~~~~~~~)))))))) <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
and the others on the thread - wouldn't be without you.

Will pop back again later

Take care all ;-) <3 ;-) <3 :-D

Hi all
xxx

we have been having some lovely weather here! Fortunately, it has cooled down a little bit since the weekend ......... 28-30C is really a bit too warm for me!

I went to a lot of theatre as a child and teenager.

First, Mum & Dad used to go roughly once a week to a local theatre that was on the music hall circuit (burlesque as it was known in the US). They started taking me when I was about 7 or 8.

That's where we saw those old music hall songs ....... father papered the wall, etc etc, and also a lot of the artistes who were on the circuit in the 1920s and 30s, were still trying to make a living at it.

We did that until around 1950 or so, then it tailed off.

We had an excellent weekly Repertory Company in my home town, and it was particularly good in the '50s and '60s. Mum & Dad started going to that .......... Monday night was Dress Rehearsal night, and you got in for half price.

I guess I was about 11 or 12 when they started going there, and I went most nights ................... you queued up outside, then there was a rush to pay at the box office, then into the theatre to get "your" seats .................... no assigned seating on that night!

Of course, all the regulars knew one another, and would not dream of taking someone else's preferred seating!

At 17, I started going to the Rep on a Saturday night with a friend ............. slightly cheaper rate because we were students. Then I left Oldham when I was 19, so only went once or twice after that.

I saw all manner of plays during those 8 or so years!

One of my first "dates" with OH (we did things together as old friends for a couple of years before becoming romantically involved and got engaged) was to see the Bolshoi Ballet in Liverpool.

Since 1968, we have had season tickets to the Vancouver Opera ....... 3 or 4 shows a season.

Hi everyone - it seems as though Sue and Anne have been keeping busy with their chatter......it's good to have friends.

Have been a bit busy over the last few days. Took my once poorly friend back to her house for half an hour. Her recovery is incredible. She managed to get up the stairs one at a time and came down on her bottom. I brought loads of washing home with me so my ironing pile is gi-normous.

My family went to Wembley on Saturday to watch the Rugby. They had a great day. Apparently, so I am told, Rugby crowds are much better behaved than football crowds...........?

Hope everyone is keeping well.......love to all. Cx.

Hi Everyone

Anne that was very informative thank you !! as air conditioners are a must here in OZ.

On the house thingy ,you can of course buy a house already up as we will sell our house we are in now to someone else.

We tend to like to build new houses but many people like to and buy a house already pre owned.
We owned our house after the 2nd one so no mortgage for us to worry about but we do not have any super to retire with so the last house will be smaller and we will have money left over for our retirement and we will still get the pension at 65 yrs of age.

My OH thinks it would be nice for us to buy the house I lived in as a child in the UK ,I don't like that idea at all as I could not live in the UK again but I like to come back for holidays.

After my trip in Jan for my Aunts Funeral I don't think I could stand the cold ,a bit of fun for a few weeks but that would be it ,the OH is an Aussie and he just wants to see sorry Cynthia !! SNOW !! i think he would love it for 5 minutes then he would spend the rest of the time indoors in front of the fire.

Raining again today but warm if that makes any sence.

Have a good day everyone

Something you all wanted to know but were affraid to ask

The Goldberg Brothers - The Inventors of the Automobile Air Conditioner

Here's a little factoid for automotive buffs or just to dazzle your friends.

The four Goldberg brothers, Lowell, Norman, Hiram, and Max, invented and developed the first automobile air-conditioner. On July 17, 1946, the temperature in Detroit was 97 degrees.

The four brothers walked into old man Henry Ford's office and sweet-talked his secretary into telling him that four gentlemen were there with the most exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter.

Henry was curious and invited them into his office. They refused and instead asked that he come out to the parking lot to their car.

They persuaded him to get into the car, which was about 130 degrees, turned on the air conditioner, and cooled the car off immediately.

The old man got very excited and invited them back to the office, where he offered them $3 million for the patent.

The brothers refused, saying they would settle for $2 million, but they wanted the recognition by having a label, 'The Goldberg Air-Conditioner,' on the dashboard of each car in which it was installed.

Now old man Ford was more than just a little anti-Semitic, and there was no way he was going to put the Goldberg's name on two million Fords.

They haggled back and forth for about two hours and finally agreed on $4 million and that just their first names would be shown.

And so to this day, all Ford air conditioners show -- Lo, Norm, Hi, and Max -- on the controls.

I can hear your groans from here. Control yourself!!!
Just forward it.

Hope you enjoyed this :-D ;-) <3

Morning all here we are again - 5am pitch black outside & a crisp cool start tot eh day - with a few seagulls shouting good morning to each other.

Sue - It all sounds so easy - so do you end up with 2 mortgages for a while or do you rent while waiting for the build to be done, or do you save enough to buy outright. Such a different system to ours.

What happens to all the houses already built - do people come along & buy it then knock it down & build a new one? Can people just look around a house & buy if they like it & move straight in. Far too many questions.

Thank you for the info - I love hearing about what goes on in different countries.

Its strange how each country has different ideas on housing.

My friends in the states - she said they look for a suitable area to live in - look around to see what is up for sale - buy the house - knock it down & build their own on the plot of land.

Over here it has been know to happen - but more than likely - you go looking for a house you like the look of - preferably in the area you want to live in. Sometimes you don't get a lot of choice - once in a lot of people modernise or restore back to its original features.

Its one big minefield the housing market.

Well off to see what is on the worklist for today

Take care all <3 <3 <3

Hi Everyone

Anne you sound like me ...my mum also loved the old musicals and I watched them with her as I was the oldest and sat up late at night waiting for dad to come home he was a long distance truck driver.

I always loved Gordon MCcray and Janet Mc donald ,I hope the new musicals are the same good quality.
I did buy the album of Phantom with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman wonderful singing.

House's in Oz ....you just go and pick your block of land (usually 1/5 of an ache)in the area you want to live we always buy that first and then we go to the display centres of witch there are plenty and pick out the house you want to build or just build one from the hundreds of plans available to choose from.... from the builders .
You then hand the plan you like to the builder to build ,he gets all the plans passed and you just sit and wait for them to build it.

About nine months later you move in ...simple really,I do enjoy building but I always fall inlove with the house and then it makes it hard to leave it .
We have done this four times already in our 41yrs of marriage ,the next one will be it and it will be smaller as well .

I had better get to my dinner dishes ,they are waiting for me .

Well i was in this morning at 7am - its early tomorrow so i can do a lot more typing - its a bit busy with other people around - so have to do a quick dissapearing act every so often

Sorry to hear your news Sylvia - it must be an upsetting time there at the moemnt - lots of change.

Cynthia - have you calmed down yet?

Robert i don't beleive you - i am sure you can get in to trouble as easily if not more than we do. You are just being modist.

Sue at weekends I only tend to do a half day - its during the week I tend to do 13 hour days - but the money is very much needed.

How do these new builds work - do you just buy a plot of land & build a place for yourself? We don't have enough space here in the UK to do that.

I love going to the theatre - its just so expensive. Years ago it was so much cheaper & my OH & I use to go at least once a month - then they did a refurb & all the prices went up - tickets in Brighton are around £45 each now - whereas Eastbour is around £20 depending on the production.

The London theatre is amazing but the cost can be from £65 to £90 a ticket for the good seats - plus the cost of the train ticket or hotel room - so its a big treat when i do get the chance.

I have seen Phantom of the Opera 6 or 7 times now - i still like it - my all time favourite is Les Miserables - I just love the music & have the 10 Year DVD as well - saving up for the 25th Anniversary show as well.

My other favourite is Blood Brothers - seen that 4 or 5 times as well - glutton for punishment.

I would highly recommend them all - do you ever get the big shows in Perth?

The film of Phantom isn't as good as the show - i saw the original cast with Michael Crawford & Sarah Brightman (saw it again with Michael Ball in as well).

The music just carries you away to a different world - les Mis just inspires you to get up & do something & join in the fight - Phantom bewitches you & holds you in its spell - Blood Brothers makes me cry - everytime i see it even when i know what happens.

Because of my job & the area i work in, My OH & i were lucky enough to go to the last night of Miss Saigon at Drury lane theatre - it was an amazing show & OH loved it - especally when the helicopter landed - he didn't know about that one. I saw Peter Polycarpou & Johnathan Pryce in that one.

The last time I went to Phantom I managed to get us the managers house special seats (a one off as it was our birthday & pulled in a favour) took my OH to see it for the first time. We sat in the prime seats in the stalls - right under the massive chanderlier - should have seen his face when the action all started to happen - it was amazing - I still like watching it from the front row of the dress circle as well - equally amazing at the vital point. Not giving anything away I hope.

Well back again - had to vanish for an hour - where was I - getting carried away by the theatre.

I blame my mum as she was a big film fan of the olf 40@50's films especially musicals - she was at the opening night of My Fair lady in London - I think I still have the programme somewhere.

Well better go - will blether on & on again tomorrow.

Love to all the missing friends as well as those on here at the moment.

Hi Everyone

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.

Mine was a little busy ,wooding on Saturday in the forest and Sunday we had visitors all day and we were trying to unload the trailer load of wood .

We managed to finish unloading the wood at 6pm last night so we just collapsed into put recliners last night.
I got to buy takeaway so did not have to cook,we had good old Fish and Chips ...now I know they are full of calories but I just could not help myself they tasted lovely.

Th OH is back to work today,I think he is happiest at work to be honest ,at home he is just looking around for things to do and there is nothing for him to do .

I think it must be about time to sell up and build again, that always brings a smile to his face not so much me as I love the house I live in at the moment but we can always build the same one again.

Sylvia
Sorry to hear of the loose of your parliamentarian, good honest ones are very hard to find ,at the moment we are very dissatisfied with our Labour Prime Minister ,she is not listening to the people in any shape or form ...she will lose the next election.

Robert after getting wood on Saturday I don't think I could get into any trouble either ...every bone in my body is aching.

Anne I hope you are not working to hard everyone needs a break sometime you know.

Cynthia

I have only ever been to one play and it as about a Football Club so It was not a good experience for me .
I would love to see Phantom of the opera though and plan to do it the next time I am in London.

Better get off and get my washing off the line as rain is forecast for tonight,we have had a good lot of rain this year ,that should keep the farmers happy.

Check in later.

hi all
xxx

very late getting here today!

we spent 2 hours this morning watching TV

the Leader of the Federal Opposition Party died on Monday, of cancer.

The federal election was only in May, and Jack Layton had led his party to a record (for that party) 103 seats in the federal Parliament. The House had one "sitting" of about a week in late June. Two weeks later, he announced he was taking a leave of absence to battle a new cancer (he'd fought prostate cancer about 18 months ago).

He was a wonderful man .......... even if you did not like his politics!

He was given a State Funeral ...... lay in state in the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa for 2 days, then in Toronto City Hall Friday and Saturday morning. Then the Memorial Service ...... ecumenical, blessings from First Nations, Anglican, Jewish, Asian ................ lots of music and singing, and laughter.

He'll be sadly missed ............. he brought civility back into politics!

RIP Jack Layton
