Cant see one in Norwich, but it may be after 1901 she meant. What about doing a name/occupation search on the 1881 census? I found a couple of John Richardsons in London who are fishmongers on that census but I havent followed them through to the next census. Just a thought, her grans dad would probably have been in the first world war- any chance of getting info that way? I went to familyrelatives.org to see how many Frederick Richardsons were born in the period 1885-1887 and there are 70 over the whole country. Unfortunately I ran out of units after the first page full! Did he have more than one name?

Yes, on ancestry. Im getting confused where her nan comes in? What does your friend think the connection is being her nan and Charlie. From there you could perhaps follow clearer lines? She says her dad Fred was in Norwich?

Thanks Heather ! She has Fredericks death certificate which states his age in 1966 when he died so she knows he was born in 1885. She has a marriage certificate for his second marriage in which he says his father was John the fishmonger. I've looked at lots of records but not yet found a fishmonger. We know that CHarlie RIchardson was born in Twickenham and his family were South London but my friend's information comes from her Nan who says that her father lived in Norwich in his early days but she won't or can't say where he was born. It was the Nan who gave the list of siblings from her memory. Thanks - I'll look for the Lewisham reference. I don't think I saw a Lewisham one when I looked before. Were you on Ancestry?

Well, there is only one in the south London area in 1891 with a father called John, albeit not a fish dealer but then, jobs change over the years. How does she know Freds year of birth? Marriage cert? How does she know the names of siblings? Have you done a check for any of the other names mentioned with a father called John, fishmonger? How does Charlies birth cert match with her family - does the mother and fathers names match? And has she then bought his parents marriage certificate? What do you think the connection is? Fred would be a quite old father to Charlie - he would have been in his 30s in the 1960s I think, then Fred would be getting on when Charlie was born. Or does she think Charlie is a cousin or something to her gran? There would still be a hefty difference in ages between her gran and Charlie - though possible if it were a big family. As far as I can recall from my childhood in south London - my large extended family were heavily involved in boxing and one of my cousins, a very good boxer (most of my cousins were much older than me as dad was youngest of 14) used to be an erm, 'bouncer' for one of the Richardsons clubs - I believe in was in Catford? (At that time, I think Charlie lived about a mile from me in Chislehurst). If so, the family with a father called John living in Lewisham in 1891 and 1901 may be a good bet. : Name Age Charles Button 7 Eliza Cripps 65 Bertie Richardson 10 Charles Richardson 7 Frederick Richardson 5 John Richardson 44 John Richardson 12 Mabel Richardson 3 Mary Richardson 44 Samson Richardson 13 Frank Williams 19

She has Charlie Richardson's birth certificate so she knows who his Dad and she could match that to her own tree but she can't find out exactly who her Great Grandfather is. There were many Frderick Richardsons born in 1885 and she doesn't know which certificate to buy. Even if she bought all of them she still wouldn't know as , according to the census there are quite a few Frederick Richardsons born in 1885 whose fathers' names were John. If she could find a census record with the appropriate brothers and sisters she might have a chance and know where he was born but so far she has found none.

What is your friend actually looking for - she seems to have her great grandad and his father? How will that help with her search? If she wants to find out Charles Richardsons grandparents etc, she will need to start buying his birth cert and so on backwards and see if it matches her own ancestry.

If your friend buys her grandmothers birth certificate, it will tell you the name of her father and his occupation. Sam x

My friend believes she is related to the infamous Charlie RIchardson and I am trying to help her to prove it (not sure why she wants to!) . I have searched the census collection and cannot find anything to match her Grandmother's recollection of her father. THis doesn't surprise me too much as Charlie Richardson actually lied about his age in his own book and there could be all kinds of funny things going on but the bare bones of it are as follows: Irene Richardson born in 1920 in Tooting (my friend's granny) Frederich Richardson born in 1885 -not sure where - a paper merchant (my friend's great grandpa and Granny's Dad) Frederick's second marriage certificate says that his father was John, a fishmonger. We believe John had other children too - Jack, William,Snowy, Dorothy,Emily,James and Charles. If anyone has any ideas it would be a great (although late) Christmas present for my friend who has been doingher head in with this search.
