The Goddard-Fenwicks were forced to leave this area because of the illness and subsequent death of Mrs. Fenwick which took place in the Laurentians in 1910.

Rev. Goddard-Fenwick returned to Nova Scotia and eventually became the Rector at Coxheath.
Only emergency services were held here until 1911, when Rev. Goddard-Fenwick received permission from the Bishop of the Diocese to begin a Mission Church in New Waterford. Regular services began on March 12, 1911 in a room of a building on the corner of King Street and Hinchey Avenue belonging to a merchant, W.J. Matthews.
One end of a company house, now No. 3452 Baker Street was obtained for a Rectory when Rev. Goddard-Fenwick promised the then Superintendent, Sandy MacEachern, to take two mine officials as boarders. As he could not get a housekeeper, Rev. Goddard-Fenwick was obliged to do the cooking, etc., in order to provide for his boarders.

So, where were the 2 G-F brothers in 1911?? Willoughby was obviously in Canada - he had married there in 1910, was widowed in 1911 and remarries in 1912.........but why not on a census?


I'm curious because I would love to know if either Willoughby or George Digby had a young child with them etc.

Hello Renes....yes, that's the correct chap but where was he in 1911???


He re-married in 1912 and, as has been mentioned before, there is an online photograph of the event. There is a small girl as one of the bridesmaids.



The write up:

The Halifax Herald, 27 September 1912, reported that "St. John's Anglican Church, Sackville, N.S., was...the scene of a pretty wedding.... Miss Major looked thoroly [sic] charming in her wedding gown of white satin, with pearl trimming, and wearing the conventional veil and orange blossoms. The bridesmaid's gown was of pale blue, the little flower girl wearing a dainty white silk frock. The ceremony was followed by a reception and wedding luncheon at the residence of the bride's parents...."



I have emailed the newspaper concerned to ask if it is possible to have the full report as I am interested as to who the small girl is. Also, one of the ladies will be Evelyn G. S. Goddard-Fenwick.



There is another Evelyn (they're all over the place aren't they?) in the Goddard-Fenwick family - Evelyn Mary Goddard-Fenwick, niece of Evelyn Gertrude, who was born in 1915.........can't find out where, and who died in the UK in 1986.

Wooo I like coming on here and its moved on a page. Thanks Choccy for the electoral rolls. Well done all you detectives and Renes that was an excellent write up with the hospital connection. I've not been feeling too great(doc thinks I have a sphenoid sinus infection) but I've still been tracking those MacLeod/McLeods that were neighbours to the Goddard-Fenwicks.

For those interested on the history of nursing etc I remember my college lecturer a few years ago telling me about a relative of hers being a nurse in the highlands and islands before the nhs came in.
