Never straightforward is it! Looked at every resident transcript for New Waterford in Canada 1911 census in case WHW GF was mistranscribed but didn't find him.

Next I thought I'd see if he was near Ella M Major but she didn't show up in a search so I went to Sackville to look for her. Looks like she is wife of a EDIT Arthur Schultz ( not George) and has two children - her mother and father appear just above them.

http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/View.jsp?id=8052&desc=1911+Census+of+Canada+page

Will carry on looking to see if WHW GF is nearby.

Like several others haven't been able to find his brother either. If it helps his full name was George Digby Crofton Goddard Fenwick. Sometimes went by the name Digby and didn't always use the Fenwick.

Julie

Edit: For those unfamiliar with the Canada Census............click on the link above to see the transcript. Then click on the district number 28 highlighted in blue. That will take you to the list of page numbers for the district. Click on the PDF link next to page 5 and you'll see the image. It does appear to say Schultz for Arthur and Ella May.

Hello everyone and thank you for your efforts - there's some good information coming in from you all.. :-D

If you aren't demented when you start on this thread....you are by the time you reach this stage...... :-S

I'm now totally confused Julie.......how can Ella M. Major be married to Mr. Shultz ?
Two with the same name? She is listed as Miss Major at her wedding in 1912.

Maybe it's time to go to bed and sleep on it..................... :-S :-(

Good night friends.... :-)

Jooleh Report 15 May 2013 22:42

I know Cynthia-- it doesn't make sense. Maybe it's not her.

I couldn't find her just by searching on her name which is why I went to Sackville (where she married WHW GF) to look at the transcripts. The couple named Major above her on the transcript have the same names as her mother and father ( as given on her marriage to WHW GF posted earlier).

If you then look for her in 1901 as Ella M Major she appears with them. All the names and the ages match up on both census. The only details that don't match are the months that they were born.

Perhaps someone else could have a look and give an opinion?

Thanks

Julie

Hi Jan yes, it's the same person....that was his first marriage. In 1936, he married Patricia Whitby and had one daughter - Helen - in 1937.

When I google about him, all I can find is that song Isobel..... :-(

I'll go and have another wander around the family for a short while..........

Traciey

Traciey Report 18 May 2013 10:36

Cynthia I googled some of the Goddard-Fenwicks a while back and there was something in the London Gazette about George Digyby C G-F applying for bankruptcy. EDIT: Date is 8 August 1939

You may have also have seen this note in the newspaper index, not sure if it relates to him, it reads:
WILL Mr and/or Mrs Goddard-Fenwick late of 25 Crockerton Road, Tooting SW18, and at one time Rustington, Littlehampton, Sussex or anyone knowing their present whereabouts please communicate with Barfield & Barfield Solicitors Danes Inn House, 265, Strand, London WC2

EDIT: The date reads 10 April 1944

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 18 May 2013 11:38

How strange! I spotted that newspaper index whilst wandering through the family yesterday Traciey.........I think it was dated 1944?? Wonder what it was all about?

I remember something about bankruptcy too.

Isn't it odd how, Diane's early years are a mystery and she has connections with a family who are full of mystery......... :-S

Not sure how much time I have today but will keep plodding on.

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 24 May 2013 18:44

Hello all - just to say that I am still ploughing away - now and then - through the Goddard-Fenwick saga.

If you remember, I was hoping to find out more about the picture of Rev. Willoughby G-F and Miss Ella Major in Sackville in 1912.

We know that Evelyn G-F went over there for the wedding and I was just curious as to which person on the photograph was her. Also, there was a little flower girl who was just about the same age as Diane. Well, you KNOW we're clutching at every straw offered.... :-D

Anyway, today I received an envelope from the Nova Scotia archives. Inside was a very nice, enlarged photocopy of the wedding with some folk pointed out. All on the brides side. :-(

There was also the full newspaper cutting which I read with interest.

The officiant at the marriage was Rev. G. M. Ambrose M.A. and the best man was Rev. Gerald Bullock B.A. The ushers were Messers Lloyd Fultz and J.P Dwyer

The older bridesmaid was.... Miss Kathleen Major, niece of the bride, and the small bridesmaid was.......

"a winsome little flower girl, also a niece."

Arrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh

The photograph and information was donated by Capt J. P. Dwyer in 1965.

It is a very 'one-sided' version of events and the Goddard-Fenwicks do not come into things at all. Not a mention.

The bride's mother, whose maiden name was Smith, apparently claimed direct descendency from Oliver Cromwell!

Whatever next?

Nice try Cynthia.
That really makes things clearer :-(
Never mind. Keep plodding.
While I´m on, am I right in thinking that we have already looked at Hope Macleod on the 1911 census with her 2 children, Deidre aged 6 b India.& son Duncan aged 4 b Mayo Ireland, living 7 Wimborn Gardens Ealing.
Hope died in 193 (I think) & probate went to Deidre, a spinster.
Scribbled the will info on a bit of paper which I now can´t find........typical.

Good morning Marion. Yes, I think we have looked at Hope before but another of those dead ends which we keep on encountering. :-(

Jooleh Report 25 May 2013 19:57

Well done for following that up Cynthia-at least we know there's no further info to be gleaned there.

I ruled out Deidre some time ago. Here's her marriage:

Marriages Dec 1931   (>99%)
Macleod  Deirdre G H  Withers  London C.  1c 1

Looked pretty hopeful before I found that!

I guess Rita could well be the 'winsome little flower girl' - Julie - just wish they had named her instead of being all poetic & flowery about her....... :-D

What next........? :-S
