Cyns

Did your contact on your other site ever come back about records at Springfield hospital

Renes

Renes Report 4 Jun 2013 12:43

Also ..... Have looked thru and cannot see a response to this -if it is there just remember I am old now -

TRACIE PAGE 105 8 MAY 2013
The nurse link again cropping up on Emily Goddard Fenwick's 1911 census, a visitor who is a nurse.
Has anyone came across a Katherine McLeod who worked at Grove Hospital and shows up from around 1921 to 1929 on the Electoral Rolls for Wandsworth, and from what I can make out the hospital was near another hospital called the Fountain Mental Hospital,
I wonder if she links to the Patrick MacFarlane McLeod family I've been looking at, although still not found anything more out than what's been posted previously by Jooles.

Hi Renes.

I was eventually given the contact details of the chap who deals with these things at Springfield. Very nice man who assured me that the hospital had absolutely nothing of help. All records are at the Surrey History Centre. Just haven't got round to contacting them yet.

Can't honestly remember about Katherine Renes. It may be worth a shot though.

Thanks..........

:-)

Hi Renes & Cynthia. I tried to trace Katherine backwards but didn't come up with much.

I also couldn't find a death but because I can't find out much about her, I don't know if this is her married name or maiden name, she could of married after 1929.

I did find a Katherine McLeod on the 1911 census, a domestic cook in Hampstead, London b c1884 Renfrew, Scotland, but unsure if this Katherine moved to Wandsworth and worked as a nurse. I'm rubbish with English records to be honest. I tried hard to find Katherine's birth in Scotland but found nothing for the year or area given on the census, I checked over a 10 year period but came up with zilch! But then I found a Catherine McLeod born at about the right time to match the 1911 census, so maybe this lady preferred Catherine with a K? and changed it. I still need to narrow it down some more, I have a few Catherine's floating about that I need to follow through.

Thanks ladies........if only we could find someone who knows something..... :-S

I have been in touch with the church at Credenhill where Evelyn G-F is buried. Her brother was Incumbent there for about 23 years and he also is buried there - so that explains why, having died in Wandsworth, she was buried in Herefordshire. There are no records of any kind for a DLM at that place. :-(

Wow ladies, can I say if there was a medal for perseverance you ladies would deserve it, to keep looking over these past few years is amazing, I hope you manage to gather the info for Evelyn.

Can I ask has anyone been in touch with the newspaper in Srornaway to ask if they can help ?, I ask this because a few years ago I was doing research on my SIL family who came from Orkney, he had heard a story about a 3 x Gt Uncle who had drowned there while out fishing, I sent an e.mail on Sunday afternoon at 1.30pm and had a reply back at 3.00pm the same day, giving me the full report as it appeared in the newspaper.

Regards and well done again
Sandra

Pretty sure that both the newspapers & the local radio station have been approached Sandra, but I could be wrong.
May be worth another try though.
Think also various magazines that run family history enquiries have been contacted without success.
Wonder if DLM was ever a Girl Guide or a Red Cross or St Johns´Ambulance member.

Cynthia Report 11 Jun 2013 19:15

Hello Sandra, nice of you to pop in - we ARE an intrepid lot aren't we? :-D

As wisechild has said, I'm pretty sure we have checked with the newspapers - in fact - I think I posted a request on their FB site.

As to whether or not DLM was ever a Girl Guide etc..........I will have a word with Evelyn to see if it rings any bells.

Thanks.......xx

Have spoken to Evelyn and, as far as she remembers, nothing was ever said about DLM belonging to any clubs/groups. Also, Evelyn has had a letter published in the Gazette and, as may be guessed, no response. :-( :-(

Have we considered this death??

Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page
Deaths Sep 1911 (>99%)
Macleod Robert 54 Wandsworth 1d 537

Clearly Diane had connections with Wandsworth so a maybe??

EDIT: FBG discounted this one on pg 4!

Vanessa

Vanessa Report 12 Jun 2013 08:19

Might tie up with this guy in 1911:
Household MACLEOD, Robert 1857 54 M Wandsworth London

And 1901:
Household MACLEOD, Robert 1856 45 M Wandsworth London

>>> EDIT: As above, already discussed & discounted on Pg 4

Vanessa Report 12 Jun 2013 08:41

Have just found that the death was mentioned around pg 103, but doesn't appear to be followed p, as the assumption was that the car accident would most likely be in fort George. But as Diane was 'sent' to Stornoway and later lived in Wandsworth it may be worthy of further investigation??
Sorry I don't have subs to investigate further at his point in time :-(

Thanks Vanessa.......I'm pretty sure that hasn't been spotted before.....wonder which Robert it is - given that we have looked at so many.... :-S

I've been side tracked a little with a brickwall of my own which has just been demolished - it took about 3 years of work so, hopefully, one day we may just solve DLM's mystery....... :-D :-D

I had a thought about a different approach to the Nicolson Institute.

One would assume that Diane would attend the same school as Donald & Ishbel? Is it possible to find their enrolments, with address & locate any others enrolled from that same address?

If there is, as appears to be, some doubt about Diane's name, any like addresses could be x-ref with Donald & Kate's children and any female 'leftovers' investigated?

Traciey

Traciey Report 17 Jun 2013 22:58

I had thought about that Vanessa but the problem with that is there will be lots of siblings called Donald & Ishbel at the Nicolson Institute (Donald & Ishbel were very common names in that area at the time) a search would need to be taken of all the Donald & Ishbels around 1918/1919 assuming Diane's year of birth is correct she would of went to school there aged 12/13 years. Another thing is we can't assume Donald and Ishbel had the surname MacLeod. But it is worth a shot if someone can search the school registers for those two years as we know Diane was supposed to have played out in the peat fields with her cousins Donald and Ishbel when she was around that age, as Evelyn remembers her mother telling her that.

Cynthia Report 18 Jun 2013 13:32

Good thinking both. I will get in touch with my contact up in Stornoway and see if he thinks it is feasible or not.
