Hi jan and thanks. I know Ann did a lot of work on the military aspect of all this - hope she is looking in and can add something about the above chap.

Re the query about Planisker School - there is someone in the archives who is looking through things for us. She tells me that she loves a good mystery.... :-S

Hope you are all coping during the present heatwave....... :-D

From my military summary on page 102

Surviving WW1 Officers files for men named Robert Macleod/McLeod at the National Archives have been searched and none seem to fit. (page 35,66)

and from pages 35 and 66 quoted above

p 35

I also looked at all the surviving R Macleod and Mcleod officers WW1 files. Again, all had to be ordered as the Catalogue doesn't give any detail. There were 12 files. Only 1 was in Seaforth Highlanders but he was born 1890 and no pre WW1 service was given. Only one man appeared to have pre WW1 service. He enlisted in 1903 and was with Royal Regiment of Artillery as Sergeant and was promoted in 1915 and became Lieutenant with RGA. Born 1886, married (no details), living in Edinburgh. Was serving in Hong Kong from 1907.

P 66

I found Robert Lockhart Ross McLeod on Saturday in Harts Army List at Kew. He was stationed in Madras in 1901 and in Dublin in 1904. Also saw the records for him that people on here have found but couldn't tie him in!

I also had a look at an officers file from WW1 for a Robert McLeod, Seaforth Highlanders. He seemed too young, though - born 24/10/ 1890, occupation Schoolmaster. There's a possible death for him in 1973. Very little in his file, but in 1915 his address was View Cottage, Edderton, Ross-shire. In 1926 he was a candidate for position of Clerical Officer in the Civil Service.

I know that anything is possible & I´m sure this will have been suggested before, but could she have been born a Leslie & registered as such?
I´m thinking that maybe she was illegitimate or her mother was a widow who subsequently married Robert Macleod & he brought her up, so she thought of him as her father ,never having known her birth father.
May be worth looking for a Macleod/Leslie marriage later than 1906.

This is probably a BIG RED HERRING however

Having trawled through 1911 census for a family with any surname but needed a mother called Catherine /Kate with children Donald and Isabel /Isabella I only found one

1911 lochs rd 87 ed4 page 4 Laxay
Catherine McKenzie head 45 w home spun tweed lochs
Christina " dau 13 scholar "
Donald " son 11 " "
Barbra " dau 9 " "
Isabella " dau 7 " "

1901 lochs rd87 ed 4 page 13 lochs

Malcolm McKenzie head mar 38 crofter lochs
Catherine " wife mar 34 "
Ann " dau 4 "
Christy " dau 3 "
Donald " son 2 "
Isabella " mother w 82 "

Marriage 13 March 1894 Lochs entry5

Malcolm McKenzie 31 bachelor Fisherman
f Donald McKenzie crofter
m Isabella " ms Smith
Cate McMillan spinster 27 dom ser
f Duncan McMillan crofter
m Christina " ms Nicolson ( dec )
witnesses Duncan McMillan and Malcolm Mcleod

IGI for McMillan family shows that Catherine had several sisters so I checked them out

Sister Louisa b21 Oct 1870 married1899

Wick entry 32
25 Aug 1899
John McLeod bachelor 30 fisherman
f Kenneth McLeod fisherman
m Mary " ms McMillan
Louisa McMillan spinster 27 dom serv
f Duncan McMillan crofter ( dec )
m Christina " ms Nicolson (dec )
witnesses Christy McLeod and John McMillan

states couple are second cousins .

Over to all of you
from census I can't find a Robert McLeod being a brother to John but I am probably missing the obvious .

I found that Catherine McKenzie died in 1946 so she def not the lady over 100.

Aaaahhhhhh kippers for breakfast!!!

Not necessarily red herrings at all - any of them.

The name 'Leslie' obviously had great significance so, yes, she may well have been born and registered with that name wisechild.

Any takers to check that please?

Kathy - you have done a fantastic job ploughing through the census but, because I struggle with census returns, I will knock on the Welsh bat's belfry door and see if she can spot anything.

Many thanks, both of you. :-D :-D

Jansmith I remember coming across that particular Robert MacLeod 2nd Leut, its a medical card and I have it saved somewhere and I'm sure it said captain on it too. If anyone wants it I can email in pdf.

I am no further forward with 1911 census, nothing of significance anyway but I continue to check through them.

The Goddard-Fenwicks were connected to Devon too were they not staying there at one time? So were Kathleen McDowall's parents or grandparents in Devon from Scotland. One of the older generation of Goddard-Fenwicks maybe just a Fenwick if my memory serves me correctly was that he was in the Navy, so was Kathleen's grandfather in the Navy. So the connections or coincidences keep coming.

We have Devon connections, Navy connections, nurse/hospital connections and not forgetting ministery/nunnery connections between the neighbours of Evelyn Goddard-Fenwickand and Patrick MacLeod.

I need to learn to concentrate on the one area but it is so hard not to drift off into another search especially with all the coincidences.

Where is the missing piece of jigsaw, I feel as if its staring me in the face!

wisechild

wisechild Report 21 Jul 2013 13:47

It would appear that this Donald mMacleod was s/o Roderick & Kate, but can´t see an Isabella in the family, although going back through the censuses, Kate appears to have had a sister Isabella, so it´s not unlikely that she named a daughter after her.

This one is really odd, but you probably need to look at it to see why.
1911 census, living at 78 Mallinson Road Battersea.
Sophia Leslie widow b c 1867 Calcutta India
Laurie Leslie 33
Leah Leslie (Laurie´s wife)
Sophia died Dec 1929 at 3 Walnut Walk. Her will says she was a single woman, not a widow.
Going back to the 1881 we have
Carlos Leslie De Vine b S America
Sophia De Vine b Calcutta
Viscount Ap De Vine b Calcutta
Lord De Vine b Channel Islands

All the links to the family vary from Devine to Leslie.
Son Laurie was a theatrical artist ? scenepainter??
There appears to have been two other sons, John Leslie (poss Lord De Vine) & Granville Leslie.......can´t find any trace of him.
Think Sophia´s maiden name was John.
Carlos appears variously as Carlos & Charles & seems to have been a physician.
He died 1905 in Worthing.
There are some WW1 service records for Laurie Leslie, but I haven´t looked at them.
Anybody up for a challenge?

I have knocked at FBG's door but no reply as yet. Mind you, she only gets up when it's dark!!!

Evelyn has been in touch and asked me to pass on her grateful thanks for sticking with this search. She does read the postings but is no longer a member here as she has no one else to research.

Don't worry Evelyn, we will keep flying the flag for you... :-D

As for the witness at Diane's wedding, Evelyn is pretty sure that F. Pratt was a male friend of her father's and that he was possibly called Frank and died young. I'll check freebmd to see........

Cynthia Report 21 Jul 2013 15:32

Nah...................hundred's of F/Frank Pratt deaths between 1930-1950.

We've more coincidences on this thread than grain of sand on a beach - at least, that what it feels like!

And yes Traciey, I sometimes feel that the missing piece is staring us in the face!

wisechild

wisechild Report 21 Jul 2013 15:36

Think we can pretty well discount the family from my last post.
Sophia says she was born in Calcutta, but on a previous census, says it was Jersey. Wasn´t there a Goddard Fenwick link with Jersey?
Anyway, the name changes so often it´s impossible to keep up & can´t find Carlos anywhere except to say that he was a widower when he married Sophia. His 1st wife who he married in 1883 died in 1885.
He was an MD & was born in Peru. (Dont think he was related to Paddington Bear though) :-D
