I have been intrigued by the Diana Mcleod with father Leslie and mother Diana/Dina?
But at the moment am still to busy to spend time on much researxh
Back to getting some sort of normal life(for me. :-D)back at the end of next week I hope.
Roof goes on shed tomorrow plus other stuff
Then next week I hope ,really ,really hope that the conservatory will be put up.
But family visit starts in about an hour here if they have opened the M4 near Newport and traffic is clearing....Air ambulance was there at 5.30 pm and it was all shut...Havent heard or seen the news since that update by SallyTraffic on radio 2.

Must be a trait of small women. My mother barely stretched to 5ft but she could spin a tale. In fact if it had been in the Olympics she would have won a gold medal every 4 years & believe it or not, her mother was the same (as I have since found out)
As for grains of truth LadyK I wouldn´t hold your breath. Never found any with my lot. Just enormous great porkies.But always worth a try.
Glad to hear that Ron is doing better. Keep shovelling all that lovely Channel Islands cream down him. That´ll put hairs on his chest.

As you have now discovered, Tarbat is the wrong side of Scotland so the good Reverend is very unlikely to be your man. Besides, a "dog-collar" in the family would have been talked about, I'd have thought.

The Gaelic name for Isobel/la sounds like Ishbel but registrars would not use Gaelic names so you are right to discard the "h".

I've had absolutely no joy with the Seaforth side of things. There's photos of some officers at Fort George but not your guy. That said, I'm really doubtful that he was ever a Major as I think there would have been a story or two.

Did she ever mention WW1 I wonder? In 1919 the Iolaire sank off Lewis and there was scarcely a household on the Island unaffected.
My mother was im Stornoway hospital two years ago and a lady in her ward had been just a toddler in 1919, but even so she spoke of it as it had such a profound effect on her family.

Anyway, if you need any more Scottish stuff looked at, let me know before Tuesday and I'll check it out Wednesday.

As you've discovered, MacLeods on Lewis are rather plentiful so it's a case of getting the right family with a Kate or Catherine as the matriarch.
It may be an idea to contact the local radio station. If you decide to do that let me know as I have a coniact in Inverness who may know the best person to talk to. He's very much involved with Gaelic programmes but has more to do with Skye rather than the Outer Hebrides.

Today I'll re-read (maybe several times!) all the relevant info and take notes!
I can't remember if Diane spoke Gaelic or had an accent. Believe me, if she spent any time in Stornoway, she'd have an accent :-)

It would be useful to know if your Mum had a Scottish accent Evelyn.
Having supposedly lived in Scotland & having 2 Scottish?? parents you would expect at least a trace.
Also, was she an only child as far as you know.
I wondered whether she was a nurse with either the Red Cross or St John Ambulance as you seem to think she wasn´t a qualified nurse.I think they were used as assistants in hospitals before the advent of the NHS (as, of course, were nuns.)

I've had another look at the MacLeod/Christie connection based on Kathy's info.

I can't find a death in Scotland for the Diana MacLeod b. in 1911.
In 1922 her mother Helen (Nellie) died; widower John MacLeod (a Cooper) was the informant.
In 1921 Nellie's mother Diana Christie m.s.Hay died; son Robert was the informant.
In 1901 Leslie Christie died; son Robert informant.
In 1911 Robert Christie's son Leslie Christie drowned aged only 9 years.

In 1922, this Diana would have only been 11 when her mum died - maybe she was sent to stay with her father's people?
Just surmising that this was the right Diana, she'd have been 18 in 1929. In Scotland she wouldn't have needed parental permission to marry, but what about England? Would she need someone's permission? Might have been easier to make herself a little older and "kill" off the father?

I'm going to Gros on Wednesday so will look for John's death and also at the 1911 census for the rest of the family. I'll also have a look to see if this Diana had any siblings.
I'll also see if I can trace John's birth etc.

By the way, if it was this Diana... the Wick accent is every bit as distinctive as the Stornoway accent, but it's also very different. The mind boggles at a combination of the two!

Yes mother had a slight Scottish accent not a broad accent but a very refined type of speech.
I dont know if mother was a qualified nurse and dont know how to check that.
She never mentioned any siblings like she never mentioned her mother.
Only tales she ever told of childhood involved cousins Donald and Ishbel, she often mentioned peat bogs so think they must have been close to home.
Had a restless night with Ron and feel I could sleep on a clothes line right now, dont think a lot of housework will get done today.

Hate to ask this question, but have just realised that Springfield Hospital was & still is, a psychiatric unit.
In view of Diana´s reluctance to discuss her background, is there any chance she could have been a patient rather than a nurse??

Do we know the date Diane celebrated as her birthday?

Not sure of date of Mothers birthday but pretty sure the month was June, she used to change the date sometimes she said it was 2nd other times it was 6th, so your guess is as good as mine.
Viv found out that Diane did work at Springfield and yes we know it was a mental hospital.
I just wish I could think of some little thing that would give us that Eureka moment but in the meantime thank you all for your interest and help
