If the information on Springfield Hospital records which I posted a couple of days ago is right (i got the information from the National Archives Hospitals database), then Surrey History Centre haven't got anything for the right dates. Still worth checking with them though!

Regarding the school. I thought someone had searched a particular school for Diane, which is why I suggested a wider date search under any female name! So is there some doubt now whether this was the right school?

Fans....I was referring to Tabitha's reference to Dover....Dover castle etc. I forgot about her Surrey offer...

Yes please Tabitha.....Surrey would be great.

Ann, there have been several schools searched but under the name of Diane LM. Evelyn seems to think that the Nicholson Institute is the most likely one but my contact has not had any luck...his comments are on the previous page I think.

I need to try the link Woody gave to see where it leads us.

We haven't heard from Evelyn for a couple of days.......hope things are going okay. Sending love....... <3 <3

Evelyn sorry to hear your problems are back again
big hugs (((((((()))))))))) <3 <3 <3 <3

Hope things improve very soon.

Cynthia - i am never too far south - we go to the Surrey office occasionally - its not really that far from us - however i go to the Kent Archive twice a month at the moment.

They hold the Dover castle records - my OH has been using them for a few weeks as both of us have ancestors in the area. At the moment i am trawling through the St Mary Dover records - its a big church. So Dover is less trouble than Surrey.

OH's Auntie & Uncle live just below the castle so you can see it from their kitchen window - OH was born in Dover within view of the castle. Funny old world. Will see if i can find anything in the military area.

My cousin is doing a big military records project at the moment - will send him some info see if he can dredge anything up - he has only just retired from the army after many years.

take care all -- happy hunting

My dad used to that but he could also read the newspaper at the same time.

If you turned over the T.V he would jump up and sy

My contact for the Nicolson Institute is giving it another shot! I have told him that we doubt that Diane was her real name but we will see what we will see.

I'm still waiting for the wills to arrive.........sigh.

At a bit of a standstill at the moment. That quiet week I was hoping for didn't quite materialize!

Thank you Cynthia.
Taking Ron out for a drive this morning, must try to cheer him up, its very difficult though.
Beautiful sunny day here in the island just like spring.
Diane is still winning at hide and seek.
I wonder who will be the one to find her??
Love to you all and thanks for your help and understanding

Hi all

After much googling I finally found a site giving details of the whereabouts of the 1st
Battalion Seaforth Highlanders.

See here: http://www.britisharmedforces.org/i_regiments/seaforth_index.htm

Here are the postings from 1899 to 1924
1899 Egypt
1903 India: Nasirabad
1906 Nowshera
1908.02 NW Frontier
1908.05 Nowshera
1910 Chaubattia
1911.12.11 Colours presented by HM King George V at Delhi
1912 Agra
1914.10 France and Flanders Meerut Div
1916.01 Mesopotamia
1918.06 Palestine
1919 Scotland: Fort George
1920 Ireland: Belfast
1924 England: Aldershot

In 1911 they were in Dehli for a state visit. The visit was organised with military precision!

See here: http://ia600300.us.archive.org/23/items/coronationdurbar030742mbp/coronationdurbar030742mbp.pdf

Sorry-don't know how to make that URL smaller. Try googling coronation Durbar Delhi 1911. The document is presented as text which I spent ages scrolling through until I realised it was available in other formats - see the left hand side at the top of the web page. I found the PDF file the best to read.

In the miscellaneous section there are details of officers and their relatives attached to the different regiments. The 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders are on pg 324 of the document (pg 334 of the PDF file). Sadly there is no Macleod present.

The last pages of the document give an index of all the names of those mentioned throughout the document. Rank and file are not included - hardly surprising as there were about 20,000 troops.

Just thought I'd share that as although it doesn't tell us anything new it might lead to some inspired thoughts.................................hopefully................... anybody? ...............once you've read the 404 pages of course!

I was talking to OH about this today and mentioned the Goddard Fenwicks and the musical links and also the nuns links amd he said

"oh the original Sister Act"

I just wonder though if she was an orphan and given the name by the nuns.

I wonder if it would be worth Evelyn having a DNA test to confirm she is linked to the Mcleod clan in Stornaway. Or even confirm if her cousins are actually blood cousins or children of aunt Kate who was called Aunt Kate out of respect as was common at that time.
I know it would be difficult but may give us a lead.

wisechild

wisechild Report 18 Oct 2011 14:34

Probably these questions have already been asked, but the thread is too long now to find the answers.
Diane went to Stornaway "at a young age" Do we know approximately how young.
Is it possible she was sent there to keep her out of harms way during WW1?
Do we know if the cousins were younger or older than her?
Have never seen mention of an uncle to go with Aunt Kate. Was there one, or was she a widow or maybe her husband was away fighting in the war.
Possibly her father was away in the war too & there was no one else to leave her with, especially if her mother had died.

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 18 Oct 2011 16:33

Thank you for that Jooleh - I think every MacLeod possible has been well and truly covered.......didn't realise there could be so many of them.

LK, I gues we would have to get hold of a MacLeod family member to get a match.

As far as the cousins are concerned, Evelyn has said that her mother talked of her cousins as if they were older than she. The MacLeod family which seemed most likely to match with Kate, Donald and Ishbel, were the family of the Rev. Donald MacLeod of Tarbat and lots of research has been done on that family.

However, Woody (who lives up in Scotland), says that Tarbat and Stornoway are too far apart for Diane to have gone to school in Stornoway. It is possible that she just visited the MacLeods during holidays I suppose.

I have had contact from the link which Woody provided and they are extremely helpful (thanks Woody). They are helping with the research on the Nicolson Institute archives and will get back to me as soon as possible.

Also, I have had a message on FB from someone who is related to the above MacLeod family - I am waiting to hear back from them.

Still waiting for the EFG will to arrive! Cor, don't you have to be patient on this thread.... :-D

Love to Evelyn........we're still trying.......xxx

Hi everyone..

I have been on Genes since 2005.. but let my membership lapse a few years back. However, i have been avidly following Evelyns thread for a long time!!

I found this on SP and had to re-scubscribe so i could post it! I couldn't even send a PM to anyone.. But if it works out then it will be worth it :)

Had another wee thought....

would it be possible to search the schools for brother and sister, Ishbelle and Donald, rather than Diane?

Sorry, if this has been done, had a quick squint through the threads and couldn't see it.

thanks

another random thought...

I can find no Robert McCleod or McLeod who received the DSO and MC during the Great War. There is a Captain (Acting Major) Roderick McLeod who received the DSO, MC and two MIDs. Could there be some confusion between the two men?

could Robert be Roderick?

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 18 Oct 2011 19:17

Hi Carol, thank you for your dedication to this search! Impressive stuff.

The 1911 you quoted has already been researched - Fans did that when she was sitting on the edge of her seat waiting for the 1911 Scottish census to be released.......(page 41).

A lot of research has been done on the MacLeods and we have them almost sewn up but there is some doubt now as to whether we have the right area. We're working on it!!

Thanks for all input.
