Hi Sue,

It may be worthwhile taking a look through the following from earlier in the thread:

MacLEOD : On her marriage certificate (1929 in London), she states her
father to be Major Robert MacLeod of the 1st Seaforth Highlanders, Deceased. Nothing of him can be confirmed despite extensive military searches being made. These can be found on ps 2-4 and 14-15 – 29 and 36 of this thread.

Hope this helps.

Susan

Thanks Cynthia

I did not realise that it had already been done...so is everyone in agreeing that her father was not who she said.

I don't seem to be of much help...will still keep digging you never know what will come up.

Hubby is reading up on the 1st battalion.

Could this be the Bombay link or is it just coincidence?

1891 RG12/419/100/19
St Mary Lambeth, Norwood.
60 year old Indian man east India merchant b Bombay.........can´t read his name.
Living with various relatives, all born Bombay.
Cook Maggie Macleod b Stornoway aged 26
Servant Margaret Macleod 16 b Stornoway.
Can´t find them on any other censuses, but the name is indecipherable.
Maybe the story about being born in Bombay was another fiction with a grain of truth?

Hi Sue, it does seem as though her father wasn't quite what she said he was but any military help is welcome.

Quoy.........Argentina??? arrrrgggghhhhh.......we'll have circumnavigated the globe before we're finished! :-S

Chris - I think anyone named Patricia who has a vague connection is worth checking out because it looks as though Diane named our Evelyn after various folk.

Definitely frustrating..............head/brickwall/head/brickwall..... :-D

A new week........

Don't know if any of you saw the Heir Hunters this morning ????

Mention was made of a 'special register' held by the GRO where children who were foundlings were given a different name.

I couldn't help but think of Diane and our search for her so I have sent an email to the GRO and asked for advice.

Will let you know if I hear anything. :-D

Don´t know whether anyone has noticed, but a certain site whose name can´t be mentioned, but begins with A is advertising free access to global immigration records starting in 3 days time.

Cynthia
I have just got round to watching Heir Hunters and came on here to put the exact same thing you have posted.

Have we looked at adoption and name change ?

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 21 Aug 2012 22:23

Don't think we have Quoy - not that I can remember anyhow. I'd wondered about Deed Poll too. Mind you, I haven't a clue where to start.....have you? Maybe it's time to start googling........ :-S

Thanks for that wisechild, can you take a look if you have a spare min......please..
.. :-D

Thanks both......every contribution gratefully received. :-)

I don't think it would be possible to find out about adoption as it didn't become legal until 1927 - too late for Diane.

A person could call themselves what they wanted as long as it wasn't their intention to defraud so I doubt that a Deed Poll was involved.

Are we definitely sure about her actual birth date??

Hi Cynthia.
had a quick look yesterday. There are several possibilities within the time frame, but the only info generally is "Mrs Macleod/Children Macleod.
Not very helpful.
I sort of remember from way back, the address 149 Beaufoy Road. Before I go back to it, has it already been eliminated? (a family of Macleods from Scotland) 1911.

Evelyn Report 22 Aug 2012 13:08

Have been off line for several days, sorry about that.
I have been asked if 1911 census for Inverness or Fort George have been been looked at, I am not SURE but think the answer is yes.
Diane said she was born in Delhi but if someone tells me that she was born on the moon I think I would believe that rather than what mother said as she seems to have told so many porkies.
I saw Heir Hunters and also wondered if that office could help us.
Thank you once again for being so helpful, your help is much appreciated.

Hi Evelyn.
If Diane was born in Delhi, has anyone checked to see if her father´s regiment was stationed anywhere near there at the time?
Also, depending on what she termed a "very young age", she may not have returned to England until after the 1911 census. After all, she would supposedly only have been 5.
Are we sure that "Aunt Kate " was her father´s relative, or could she have been related to her mother whose name we don´t know?.
Maybe the latest exploration to Mars with throw up some clues. ;-) ;-) ;-)
Regards Marion

Evelyn Report 22 Aug 2012 14:17

Hi Marion,
It is quite possible that Diane did not arrive in U K until afterthe 1911 census.
I have never known if Aunt Kate was a relative of Dianes Mother or her father.
I do believe that the age she gives for herself is pretty close judging by her looks and other things about her.
As I have said before she appeared to have had a good education and was knowledgable about many subjects. Had A levels been invented in those days I am sure she would have got an A* for fibbing.
I still dont understand why her mother was never mentioned or where her private income came from, Granma Roy always refered to her as a woman of mystery, how right she was.

Is her full date & place of birth not on her death cert, or was it too early for it to be included?
