And if you have no luck in Eire we will try the north of Ireland.

FannyByGaslight Report 9 Jul 2009 14:14

I have searched the army index,s on Find my past for this girl from 1911 being born in India ,but I have not found her.

HOUSEHOLD MCLEOD DEIDRE F 1905 6 Brentford Middlesex

Nor have I found her brother Duncan being born in Ireland.

HOUSEHOLD MCLEOD DUNCAN M 1907 4 Brentford Middlesex

I would suggest that you ring or write to

Office of the registrar genral
goverment offices,convent road,roscommon,co roscommon,eire.
{090}663 2900

And ask them if they would do a search of their registers for Duncan mcleod/macleod,with fathers name Robert.
Well it would rule them out or in that way.
And they only deal in euro!

But they are normally very helpful.

Shouldnt the james be harold?
What do you mean ,no James in household?

And yes,,Ishbel was born 1899.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 30 Jun 2009 22:45

Well we have witness Malcolm D Grieve.

1901

Name: Malcolm Douglas Grieve
Age: 2
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1899
Relationship: Son
> Father's Name: James
> Mother's Name: Josie Henderson (Jessie, of course)
Where born: Skinburness, Orkney

Name: James Grieve
Age: 35
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1866
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name : Josie Henderson
Where born: Montrose, Forfarshire
> Occupation: Minister Of Ronaldsay Parish

Civil parish: North Ronaldshay
County: Orkney
Address: Parish Mause (Manse)

James Grieve 35
Josie Henderson Grieve 24
Malcolm Douglas Grieve 2
Sarah Tulloch 24 - servant

So there's an Orkney thing.

No Harold in the household. There were 3 Harold Grieve-s born in 1901 at SP. None in the decade before, and 1 in the decade after. I suspect this was why Ishbel understated her age on the passenger records. (She was actually born 1899ish per the 1901 census?)

Oops, missed this:

Name: Josie Henderson Grieve
Age: 24
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1877
Relationship: Wife
Spouse's name : James
> Where born: Scotia, Nova

Canada!

Whole new vistas. Hopefully, that was unique to the Grieve family.

(I've fixed the name that should've been Harold, Viv, ta, so as not to confuse, so you can delete if you iike.)

I know, Vivienne ;) -- the family connection between Diane and Grieve, the Grieve records. Really, I'm up to speed! That's why I gave page numbers for ref, so as not to have the same things going over and over.

Oh, okay, oops - missed the Malaysia bit. ;) Good place for a rubber plantation. Or Singapore.

I edited above to put in the parents for the 1891 John Grieve, just for ref in case any connection does become apparent.

And just for light relief, looking in the IGI for any of that John Grieve's children (looking to see where he spent time), I got this one:
BAGGOT OFFLEY GREIVE (no relation!)

Now who would do that to a baby ...

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 30 Jun 2009 21:38

Truthfully I do not know but believe June I do not know what date. Like most other things her birthday seemed to change from time to time, in those days we didnt send cards or make a fuss about birthdays.
Somehow I still believe that Ishbel is the right cousin, I really feel that Vivienne found the right one

EVELYN
What date and month did your mother celebrate her birthday?

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 30 Jun 2009 21:28

Ishbels parents were
Donald,minister of tarbat
and mother Kate.

Uncle and aunt of Diane I have always believed

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 30 Jun 2009 21:24

Remote it would be then, because that 1891 John Grieve was of an age to be Harold's father/uncle etc, rather than sibling.

If Harold Grieve was a rubber planter, it was not in the UK!

How interesting that Ishbel had an occupation shown, and that it was a rather highly specialized one.

India or Ceylon (as it then was) maybe, possibly father was a missionary or a military chaplain ...

Submitted record in the IGI for the 1891 John Grieve:

John Andrew MacKenzie Grieve
Birth: 1854 Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
Death: 1933
Father: Andrew Grieve
Mother: Louisa Jane Salmond
Marriages:
Spouse: Charlotte Elizabeth Roney Dougal
Marriage: 04 NOV 1884

Ishbel died in 1976 in district Invernesws aged 79 in 1976

Joggle the memory, Evelyn, and I'll fall out -- I know the tale well. ;)

I also think the Robert Lockhart Ross MacLeod that Deborah found (on page 11), in the 1891 census and then marrying in 1896 in India, is very interesting.

A military surgeon would have had an officer's rank, I think.

And with a Grieve in the same unit in 1891.

Ishbel MacLeod's husband was Harold Graham Grieve (page 8 in this thread).

Vivienne, you said:

ishbel macleod, daughter of donald and kate macleod,
married ,harold graham grieve ,,,rubber planter..
on 22 /10 1929

I don't know where that came from. Any indication of Harold's parents?

It would be a bit of a remote connection, but all stones are worth turning over.

Hello Janey,
Thanks for your interest,
Diane Leslie was supposedly born in Delhi India then lived for a while in Inverness before moving to Stornoway to live with her Aunt Kate.
I guess its quite possible she changed her name.
Kind regards
Evelyn

JaneyCanuck Report 30 Jun 2009 19:13

Hello Evelyn, you remember me. ;)

I did a search of the 1911 census just out of curiosity and there are something just over a dozen DIANEs. I really think it was a very unusual name at the time and it's as likely as not that this was not her name at birth.

I wondered about this one from a list Vivienne posted on page 8:

16 1904 MACLEOD MHAIRI ISHBEL M F INVERNESS /INVERNESS 098/00 0262

The name Ishbel there is interesting. And the given name might be one that a modern young woman who had left Scotland might abandon.

The geography still eludes me. I suspect that birth is nowhere in our vicinity.

When is the 1911 Scotland census going to be available??
