perhaps he is very busy

FannyByGaslight Report 12 Mar 2009 19:02

well i thought evelyn may have done it before ,as i did suggest that she write to the tarabat minister back in december.
wonder if he is of the same macleod family and a descendant of donald and kate!
would have thought so somehow.
mind you i suggested a lot of things and maybe that was missed.

I was going to suggest that yesterday too, before I fell asleep ...

My fame spreadeth. ;)

If only I were any good at Scottish stuff ... let alone Irish stuff ...

I was going to say a bit about "Diane" yesterday but had to get some sleep.

I'm with Carol on the alternate-name thing.

"Diane" is a modern name. In the English GRO, from 1900 to 1910, there was a grand total of *six* Diane births registered.

Remember how in the olden days people were Louisa, not Louise? Sophia, not Sophie? Susannah, not Susan?

Diana, yes. Diane, no. So the least I'd consider is Diana, and maybe, if she was so fed up with an old-fashioned awkward name like Donaldina by the time she was a young girl, or when she married, she just rejected it and took on a new-fashioned name.

My grandmother's groom in 1918 thought her name, Lily, was "common", and she became Lilian when she married. We just found someone's grandmother Kathleen Marion being born in the late 1800s as Kate Mary, last week.

So I'd seriously consider looking for Diane under other given names.

I'd also consider the possibility that her parents weren't married, and either

(a) McLeod was her mother's surname, and her father was Robert and in the Seaforth Highlanders, but not a MacLeod

or

(b) her father was Robert MacLeod, but she was registered with her mother's surname.

Those do seem somewhat unlikely in view of the other facts in the story, so I'd consider looking at other MacLeod births in names that she might have abandoned in favour of "Diane".

Evelyn

You are not forgotton.

I have sent an email to the present minister at Tarbat , a John MacLeod and am hoping to hear back from him soon.

If you can please follow up on the possible school records that maybe at the Highland Council Archive.

Also I believe that soldiers who were in India around 1908 received the India General Serivce medal 1908. The lists are at the National Archives at Kew, so maybe Robert received one.

You also mentioned that Diane had a private income, coud that have been Robert's army pension, maybe the National Archives have a record of that even if the service record has been destroyed.

I've searched Army Lists to no avail, but you may have better luck, most libraries have a copy.

I am also having trouble finding brith record of one of my relatives supposedly born in India so I think maybe the records are incomplete.

Will be in touch when I have more.

More websites to look at !! ....

Hi Carol, thank you for your help but my mother insisted she was born in
India though one of my brothers told me she was born in Inverness, this was not so she told me she lived at Fort George Inverness after coming over from india. I expect it is quite possible that her name was Donaldina
though would it be in order to call hersef Diane on Legal documents?
