I'm sorry - I didn't realise - didn't mean to be rude. It must be a lot for you to take in.

Oh thank you Carol you have got me weighed up, Im just a giddy kipper, I do mean well and would never intentionally upset anyone. I wish you all well, all I want to do is find my roots before I hang up my clogs.

Ann

I dont think she means too.. shes is 76 years young and trying to navigate a computer and all the questions and info we are bombarding her with.

i think Evie suggested to her to print it all out and digest it..

maybe thats what she is doing and will get back to you/us.

Carol :)

I fell you're ignoring advice - don't know why. I'm trying to help but you seem not to take any notice.

Hi Carol,
Thank you for that, I have always wondered about the Leslie, especially with the way it is spelt, my eldest brother is named Ian Leslie Walter so mum obviously wanted to keep the Leslie in the family, I keep racking my brain to see if I can remember any small detail that might help because sometimes even the most minute detail can help. My mother never mentioned her mother so I have no information on her at all , I dont know if she died when mum was young if not why was my mother sent to Stornoway to live with her aunt Kate?.

Hi all

I have just read this thread and my what a minefield.

Found this on SP

1970 LESLIE DIANE ELIZABETH F WESTRAY /ORKNEY

1981 LESLIE DIANE KAY F KIRKWALL /ORKNEY

Now the reason i mention it is.. Leslie is a Surname up on the Islands....

So it could be possible that her middle name is Leslie. After her mothers maiden name.

IE JOHN SMITH .... JONES...

Just another idea

FannyByGaslight Report 11 Mar 2009 21:20

well im off for a while now to search for a similar lady also
missing in action
1911 census ,born new york,america
1901 .born wetherbury yorks
who on her m.c says her father was ,,a gentleman,,
think weve found her in the workhouse in 1891!

Sorry, of course it was her marriage cert - so many posts on here I didn't look back through all of them! I mean that finding out about him would hopefully lead to where she was born at least, which would make searching easier. His records might also give his wifes name. Doesn't matter about Seaforth Highlanders records going up in smoke - his records may well be available elsewhere. The medal card doesn't tell us anything apart from medal entitlement and it might not be the same man anyway.

Deaths Sep 1911 (>99%)
Macleod Robert 54 Wandsworth 1d 537

and this isnt him either as ive just checked him out on 1911

FannyByGaslight Report 11 Mar 2009 20:56

i have just downloaded the medal card and it says his first theatre of war was ,,france,,
and has no info of age etc on it whatsoever
in fact there was hardly anything on it at all

hi annielaurie we are just going round in circles? we don't know if he was who he is said to be? it's only hearsay although from a good source? evelyn has visited the fort and the museum of the seaforths all info destroyed in fire, he was deceased by 1929 but cannot find him any where if the archives are about him can we prove it, evelyn knows as said before he was deceased by 1929 but did he die in the war or after?
i agree at the moment the only info we have is the medal card but will it take us any closer to finding out where and when his daughter diane was born?

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 11 Mar 2009 20:49

her marriage cert says seaforth highlander, not the birth cert.
thats what this is all about,
finding the birth cert .

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 11 Mar 2009 20:49

I have seen my mothers marriage certificate and it gives her father as Robert Macleod , Major Seaforth Highlanders ,deceased.
She married my father Herbert Robert John Roy in Wandsworth in 1929 and died on 28th July 1953 in Weymouth dorset.
Mum was 46 when she died

was plain ann now annielaurie Report 11 Mar 2009 20:23

His daughter said he was a Major. Her birth cert apparently says he was in the Seaforth Highlanders, so this would seem an obvious thing to check, as it's the only info we have on him.

Grumpy

Grumpy Report 11 Mar 2009 20:04

what was diana's birthday?
how old was she when she died?

annielaurie, acknowledgement is nothing to do with me but it appears at the moment we cannot even confirm he was who he is supposed to be let alone confirm he was in the army if we could it would be the easy route?

this sort of confirms her spelling of the name

If you want to know where her father was at the time of her birth, you need to look at his service records which may tell you. They will be at the National Archives. I think this is the 3RD time I've said this with no acknowledgement
