don't forget that English education was, in general, very good in the years from about 1900 to WW2.

Even though people left school at about the age of 12, they had excellent groundings in the basics ........ and speech was often included.

Scottish education was considered even better.

My parents both left school at 12, after having completed the required number of days attendance. But, like millions of others, they never stopped learning.

They always read newspapers, we had a couple of reference books at home ...... not many novels ..... and were vitally interested in all that was going on. I think that was very common ........ night schools etc were there for everyone.

Looking back, it is quite amazing how much they knew about "things" ....... events, how machines worked, just plain general knowledge, etc etc

Plus it was quite possible that Diane paid for elocution lessons after she became of an age to have money .... tha'ts if she was trying to move herself up in the world.

Evelyn.
My mother was exactly the same. Very snobby......think Hyacinth Bouquet.....well spoken, always eager to put everyone else right & never missed an opportunity to tell everyone she had a private school education & as I think I have told you before, there is something "not quite right" about her family too.My brother & I always say that she makes Hans Christian Anderson look like an amateur.
As you say, she wasn´t responsible for how she came into the world, but I think that during the inter war period, people were a lot more secretive than they had been before, or were afterwards.
Keep smiling.

Thank you Marion,it makes me wonder what Diane was trying to hide, she was quite a snobby person, perhaps she had dillusions of granduer and had come from very poor beginnings, though as I have said previously she must have had a good education and was knowledgable on lots of subjects, she spoke beautifully and was not inclined to drop her Hs.
Whatever her roots were, however bad ,she was not responsible for that in the same way that I do not feel responsible for the fact that she told so many porkies.

Evelyn.
Console yourself with the fact that even if you were able to have 5 minutes with her, she probably wouldn´t answer your questions. Anyone who has covered their tracks so successfully would be unlikely to spill the beans.
We´ll just have to keep looking.
It´s become an obsession with me. Every site I go to I look for a Macleod link.

Hello again everyone, sorry not to have posted for a while, have been a bit under the weather, but O K now.
Well the dratted Diane still manages to remain hidden, she must have been born at some stage, I wonder why she wanted to hide the fact, what is the mystery, how I wish I could have a five minute conversation with her.
Many thanks to you all for your interest and help
Love to you all

I had someone in Scots BMD :-D) very kindly look up all Donaldinas and other sorts ...He spent a lot of lunch hours searching for any possible for her between 1899 and 1910 that I put his way and found nowt.
But of course I/he may have missed THAT elusive one that may have been her..

Back along on this thread are LOADS of poss births that I posted at the time from SP and I know that what I did not check at that time on SP itself then he did in the office...
I have also followed up most of ,if not all,the possibles for a Donaldina or any other name of illegit births in Scotland.
India and Egypt I have had no luck in finding anything at all though..

Hope that helps
Fans..

re the births on SP one is 1897 and the other is 1898 as both are for a female named Donaldina I have a strange feeling that for some reason it has been recorded twice.

Cynthia before I use any credits on SP can you let me know if these have been checked before and if not and you want them checked let me know and I will look at them both

There´s an entry on Anc. Campaign medals for what must be the same chap, because the details are similar.
Only problem is I can´t remember which campaign it was.
Senility gallops on.

PS. Anybody know anything about Christina Hellen MacLeod that I posted yesterday?

Is a London Gazette entry which is free to search online. No need to pay a site like that one to obtain it. There's an entry in the London Gazette of 1/6/1917 for a Robert Macleod T/Lt, formerly Seaforth Highlanders. I think AGES ago I looked at all the surviving R Macleod Officers files at Kew and found nothing which fit "our Robert". So, that would mean, I suppose, that either his file hasn't survived, or he served after 1922, in which case his records should still be with the MOD, and we'd need to prove his death to get hold of copies from them, which of course we can't do.
