Thanks for that Eileen.
So there could be a grain of truth in the "born in India" story.
All we need now is to find out when & where.
Afraid I´m clueless about military history, but would have thought that there would be some mention somewhere of Robert if he was a major. Especially so close to WW1

Wisechilds comment on p81 about location of regiment at time of Diane's birth:-

I have found a story on the Internet about a Lt. Arthur Andrew Spottiswoode of the 1st Seaforth Highlanders 1881-1910 - some time in 1902 they sailed from Egypt to India and were garrisoned at Nasirabad - battles at Nowshera and Matta are mentioned.

Nasirabad is south of Delhi - I don't know how many miles though - and there is a Roman Catholic Church there called St Martin's.

Just thought I'd throw this in for good measure - you never know!

Evelyn, Do you recall the number of the shop on Brixton Road that your uncles coffee shop was on? Or Where abouts it was located?

LadyKira

LadyKira Report 22 Aug 2012 22:26

HMM it was the connection with musicians that made me note it too. Brixton was a fairly well to do area then with quite a few theatres of which the now O2 is one.

Hi all.

I think all aspects of Diane's possible birth abroad were investigated at the beginning of the search, likewise the 1911 census 'cos we all sat with fingers crossed whilst Fans did the search!!

Also, the phrase 'Mrs MacLeod and children' rings several bells so I guess that was looked at also.

You were alert when you spotted that address LK......Evelyn was born at No. 44 Dafforne Road - maybe it was an area which attracted musicians.... :-S

I haven't heard back from the GRO yet but will nudge them soon.

If adoption and deed poll are unlikely, and people can call themselves anything they like etc., then I guess that Evelyn has a few choice names which she would like to call her mother at the moment!!! :-D

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 22 Aug 2012 17:56

I am talking about the musician on this thread

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 22 Aug 2012 17:52

The musician was Evelyn Goddard Fenwick who was my godmother and Dafforne Road was where I was born

LadyKira Report 22 Aug 2012 17:25

A bit strange this.

I am on a work break and started to read threads.I got to this one and Dafforne Road is mentiond connected with a musician.

No time to check it out.

Evelyn.
Is her full date & place of birth not on her death cert, or was it too early for it to be included?

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 22 Aug 2012 14:26

Sadly not, though she said said her birthday was in June I do not know which day

Hi Marion,
It is quite possible that Diane did not arrive in U K until afterthe 1911 census.
I have never known if Aunt Kate was a relative of Dianes Mother or her father.
I do believe that the age she gives for herself is pretty close judging by her looks and other things about her.
As I have said before she appeared to have had a good education and was knowledgable about many subjects. Had A levels been invented in those days I am sure she would have got an A* for fibbing.
I still dont understand why her mother was never mentioned or where her private income came from, Granma Roy always refered to her as a woman of mystery, how right she was.

Hi Evelyn.
If Diane was born in Delhi, has anyone checked to see if her father´s regiment was stationed anywhere near there at the time?
Also, depending on what she termed a "very young age", she may not have returned to England until after the 1911 census. After all, she would supposedly only have been 5.
Are we sure that "Aunt Kate " was her father´s relative, or could she have been related to her mother whose name we don´t know?.
Maybe the latest exploration to Mars with throw up some clues. ;-) ;-) ;-)
Regards Marion

Have been off line for several days, sorry about that.
I have been asked if 1911 census for Inverness or Fort George have been been looked at, I am not SURE but think the answer is yes.
Diane said she was born in Delhi but if someone tells me that she was born on the moon I think I would believe that rather than what mother said as she seems to have told so many porkies.
I saw Heir Hunters and also wondered if that office could help us.
Thank you once again for being so helpful, your help is much appreciated.

Hi Cynthia.
had a quick look yesterday. There are several possibilities within the time frame, but the only info generally is "Mrs Macleod/Children Macleod.
Not very helpful.
I sort of remember from way back, the address 149 Beaufoy Road. Before I go back to it, has it already been eliminated? (a family of Macleods from Scotland) 1911.

I don't think it would be possible to find out about adoption as it didn't become legal until 1927 - too late for Diane.

A person could call themselves what they wanted as long as it wasn't their intention to defraud so I doubt that a Deed Poll was involved.

Are we definitely sure about her actual birth date??

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 21 Aug 2012 22:23

Don't think we have Quoy - not that I can remember anyhow. I'd wondered about Deed Poll too. Mind you, I haven't a clue where to start.....have you? Maybe it's time to start googling........ :-S

Thanks for that wisechild, can you take a look if you have a spare min......please..
.. :-D

Thanks both......every contribution gratefully received. :-)
