Did Evelyn ( DIANE) have that many Brothers and Sisters and if so are there any of them still with us who may be able to give some extra info.

Yes Cynthia I mentioned it way back in the spring, but like you I can´t remember how long ago.
In any case it wasn´t as detailed as Jansmiths post.

Do you think we should create a website for Evelyn & put all the info on it?
This thread has more info than Wikipedia :-D :-D :-D

Hello Reece, nice to see you. I think that programme was mentioned before but. because of Evelyn's situation with Ron at the moment, she felt she really couldn't cope with anything like that at the moment. It's something to keep in mind though.

Jan, that passenger list rings a bell and I think it must be on this thread somewhere......it's so flippin' long now that it's hard to check back!

I guess the LMA records may be worth a try.......where's that Fans when you want her.....???? tuts.

Tabitha only suggested it because fannybygaslight wrote

"2 days worth of hassling the Head of Personnel by phone at Springfield hosp gave me the dates she worked there from and her name on their file ,but nothing else was on it they said..

Dates she worked there were
7-6-1927 to 19-6-1928."

so i only wondered if there might be more than that at the LMA if records from the hospital have been deposited there?

Reece Report 5 Oct 2011 14:20

Did anyone else hear the "Tracing your Roots" programme on Radio 4 yesterday (Tuesday at 4.00pm) where they revisited some previous investigations and came up with some stunning results.

I couldn't help thinking - surely they can find Evelyn's mother's history.

I am wondering if, as an almost last resort for Evelyn, contact with that programme's producer would be of any help?

What do you all think? I know there is much wonderful research being done by so many kind members on here.

Do you know of the programme Evelyn? I'm not sure whether you listen to BBC where you are.

Ref Springfield Hospital records - I am sure that Cynthia or FBG mentioned that they had spoken to the person in charge who had no other records apart from the ones they had already discussed with her & only for the time she actually worked at the hospital - Which I am sure is all the info they actually sent to the LMA for their records as well

So not worth going to the LMA just to check it out as its already on one of the thread pages

Gosh this is getting better than a thriller - my OH has got no further either - sorry :-( but we will still keep trying Evelyn

There was something i thought of when i was reading through the last 5 pages - :-| but someone just asked me a work question & now its gone again.

I will try reading it through again & see if it pops back - will do some more trawling through records as & when I can for you.

Evelyn - we will find her - under what name is another question :-S

Thanks Cynthia and Jan for the Kirby info.

John Johnson Kirby wasn't too difficult to track from birth to death except in terms of his 'wife'. He married Charlotte Alice Howson in 1888 and they appear together in 1891 with a child Lily. By 1901 Charlotte has reverted to her maiden name and is living with her mother. Lily is with her. John has taken up with Eliza who appears as his wife in 1901, 1911 and the electoral registers posted by Cynthia.

He appears to get himself in a bit of a twist when he enrols in the army in 1915 aged 45. He cites Charlotte as his wife, giving all the 1888 marriage details and address as 53 Khartoum Road. Under 'children' he lists only 2, John Alfred born 1905 and Esther Gertrude Caroline born 1902. No mention of Lily, William or Ada Leah (she appears aged 1 In 1901).

There's a tree on Ancestry but they don't seem to have recognised that Charlotte and Eliza Annie are not the same person (I've cross checked everything and I'm pretty sure they are not one and the same).

The tree accounts for all the siblings lives except Esther - they only have her birth.

I won't clutter the thread with all the census info unless anyone thinks it's worth exploring further. It seems likely, as Cynthia pointed out earlier, that Diane was only staying with them temporarily and therefore possibly not connected to them.

Julie

Edit : Ida Leah died in 1901 so maybe he was only listing children from his current relationship. I suspect William was born to Charlotte not Eliza.

London Metropolitan Archives to look up Spring field hospital info only for her.

Hi Cynthia
Don't worry about being a Sassenach! You might not know the Highlands and Scottish geography as I do, but I simply wouldn't have a clue about English locations either. I know some general areas but all the places that are being mentioned around London etc mean nothing to me. Each to their own, I suppose!!

However, as regards peat bogs - they are far more likely in Lewis than in Tarbat, Easter Ross. The soil in Easter Ross is good growing soil but it's not peaty, it's too sandy in texture.
I've certainly never heard of people digging peats in Easter Ross - that doesn't mean it didn't happen of course.
Further north, towards Wick which is where the Diana MacLeod b. 1911 lived, the soil is heavy and peaty again.

In Lewis (as in Skye), every single household would have had it's own peat bog. That was the only way they would have been able to heat their homes and to cook food.
There are trees but certainly not enough to provide fuel. Coal would have been imported from southern Scotland - costly even without the additional transport costs to take it to the Outer Hebrides.
Remember also, the islanders were barely scratching a living from the land and the sea around it, so the chances of being able to afford a lot of coal was slim. They all used peats, and some still do.

I think someone made a mention of a person on one census being a crofter but a fisherman on the next. That happens often, he might still have been a crofter but on one census - I think it was the 1891 - that term was no longer accepted. Also, after the worst of the Clearances, some men no longer had a croft but all of them had access to the sea and used it well.

Evelyn, that's odd that your mother used to say that one day man would land on the moon - I often remember my grandfather saying the same. He lived till 1967 but this would have been pre-1960 as I stayed with my grandparents till then.
One thing I can tell you about island life is that everything - when to plant, when to harvest etc - revolved round the moon and the tides. The Old Moore's Almanac was as important as the Bible.

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 4 Oct 2011 14:39

Mentioning spaceships reminds me of something Mother did say.
Remember she died in 1952. she always said that one day men would land on the moon, for once in her life she told the truth.
What wonderful people you all are, trying so hard to help me, thank you all from the bottom of my heart. <3

Wisechild, there are so many coincidences in this search that it's hard to know which way to turn. Hope Fans checks the above marriage. :-D

Hi Woody, the Tarbat/Stornoway distance has been pointed out before but that MacLeod family seems to be the one with the names in which Diane mentioned. It could be that she visited the MacLeods rather than lived with them I suppose.

Being a sassenach (is that the term?), I see that Evelyn mentioned that her mother had talked about peat bogs - are they specific to certain areas?

Diane told so many tales that I am wondering if she came in a spaceship!! :-D

I know anything´s possible with this lady, but could she have been born before her parent´s marriage (whether in India or wherever)
That might account for her being so particular about the name Leslie & also for the secrecy.
Have these 2 marriages been checked out?
Robert Macleod1st quarter 1908 St George Hanover Square
Rothes Beatrix Leslie 1st quarter 1908 St George Hanover Square.
Unfortunately they didn´t marry each other.
Update.
Rothes B Leslie was b abt 1897 in India. 1901 She´s at school in Billericay.
Brook House, Brook St.
Another Rothes B Leslie who could have been her grandmother married Hugh Inglis St marylebone 16.7.1831. They had a daughter Robina b abt 1840 in Scotland. In 81 she was Robina Watson, but there was also a son called Webb in the household. Rothes Inglis is with them.
The interesting thing is that Robina was a music teacher.
Coincidence?

Hi Cynthia
The Tarbat mentioned as the address for the Minister & family is nowhere near Stornoway, I'm afraid. It's actually in Easter Ross-shire.
Stornoway is on the Isle of Lewis which is the Outer Hebrides though it also comes under Ross-shire.
There is a Tarbert but that's on Harris, the neighbouring Island to Lewis. Just to complicate matters, it comes under Inverness-shire though less than 40 miles from Stornoway!

Has anyone followed up on Kathleen McDowell??

She's the one constant resident at 44 Dafforne Road from 1931-1933:-

"The voters listed at 44 Dafforne Road in 1932 are:

Evelyn Gertrude Goddard-Fenwick Herbert Robert John Roy, Diane Leslie Roy, Kathleen McDowell. The voters listed at the same address in 1931, in case it is of relevance, are Frederick Robert Smithson, Alice Smithson, Edward Hubert Mearing, Doris Mearing, and Kathleen McDowell, and in 1933, Evelyn Gertrude Savile Goddard-Fenwick, Emily Goddard-Fenwick, and Kathleen McDowell. Was this a rental property?"
