See I told you I was thick.
So now you reckon neither the Roy,s nor Macleods could write thier names, now what chance do I have?
Thanks for your help Viv, I appreciate it

I'm starting to doubt this one too but I suppose we have to rule him out at least!

Yes of course he would Evelyn, but could his parents?
Thats a possible marriage for his parents I was looking at on Scotlands people...going on that Catherine Mackinnon (widow)who sorted the Will (that MAY be him)was maybe his sister.
I did that to try and trace her on census but have got nowhere with it.

Ordered that Liverpool death yesterday and posted off the Will application this afternoon...

Leave it to us experts..(ha ha)We will try to get there in the end and if we dont it wont be for the want of trying...

I have just been thinking, if Robert was a Major in Seaforth Highlanders he would surely have been able to sign his name

They were both living in Waternish when marrying and both were illiterate as they made their mark.

The groom Farquhar was aged 33 on marriage and a fisherman, but I cant find them on ANY census.
I did find a Catherine whos husband was away ,with a child called Farquhar in the house, but she was born 1836,(on 2 census)not 1856.

Catherines parents were
Alexander Macleod ,,crofter,,,(deceased)and Mary (maiden name )Beaton.

I found some of the beaton family with a Mackinnon in the household but truly can not find Catherine and Farquhar on any census anywhere.

If this is Aunt Kate, I wonder where do Donald and Ishbel fit in?.
I really am very grateful for your help.
We are now in Brittany, the weather is cold but bright.

I wondered about that.
She could be the aunt Kate Diane went to live with.

How about if Catherine Macleod /Mackinnon was that Roberts sister?

1886 MACKINNON FARQUHAR MACLEOD CATHERINE WATERNISH /INVERNESS

She was aged 30 on it and a spinster.

I think that just because it says Widow, it doesn't necessarily mean that she was HIS widow!

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 29 Aug 2010 18:57

Ann.
Do you think that Mackinnon was Catherines maiden name?

There is no marriage on SP for that duo,but if its likely I can trawl Overseas marriages on FMP.
I would have thought it would maybe have turned up on SPs service returns...but no..

Going out for a while, will do it later.

Yes, I noticed the difference in the image and the transcript. I'd go by the image! There's a death at the right time in Liverpool - aged 58. Think the spelling of the surname is slighly different in the Deaths index.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 29 Aug 2010 18:18

Ann.

It says he died in Stornoway on the Transcript and Liverpool on the image?

I can find no death for him on SP NOR on freebmd, can you?

Obits, where to find an obit for him?The Times?

FannyByGaslight Report 29 Aug 2010 17:11

You need to send for that Will then Evelyn I would say,I would not leave that stone unturned.

OOH, there's an entry in the Probate Index for 1918 on Ancestry as follows

Robert Macleod of 14 Battery Park Stornaway died 7 Mar 1917 at Liverpool. Confirmation of Catherine Macleod Mackinnon widow. Sealed London 28 January.

Seems a strong possibility in view of the mention of Stornaway. There are a couple of others too - 1 with a Glasgow address (Robert Alexander), died1926 and 1 died Edinburgh in 1927 - this one was a Reverend, though.
