Is anyone able to look up parish records for a marr in St Marys, Portsea, Hants? Thomas Baker & Lucy Stovold - 22 July 1844. I would like to know who the witnesses were please. I have a print out from IGI but it doesn't give this info. I have also looked on opc, but this period is not transcribed yet. Thank you in advance.

Hi, I'm new to this - sorry if this message appears twice but my first attempt doesn't seem to have worked.
I am trying to find birth & marr of Thomas Baker. He was born 1813-1820 in either Mountsorrel or Syston, Leics (he kept changing his mind on the census). The first record I have of him is 1841 census when he was in Godalming Surrey. In 1851 he was in Elstead, Surrey with "wife" Lucy (Stovold). I have not been able to find their marriage, which would have given me his father's name. I have checked some parish birth records for Mountsorrel (no Bakers at all) & Syston (some Bakers but no Thomas).
Thanks in advance for any help you are able to give.

Hi Mike,
I have previously checked the Portsea Isle marr & it wasn't them, but thanks anyway.

Bit of a coincidence with a name like Stovold.
also the fact that their first child was born 1845

What info on that marriage cert led you to believe it was the wrong couple.?

SPS

SPS Report 11 Jan 2011 21:14

The occupations were wrong for Thomas & Lucy's father. Also I believe I checked the next census (1851) & found this couple still in Portsea, whereas my Thomas & Lucy were in Elstead.

So is this your Lucy also in Godalming in 1841??

Are you saying that both Thomas and Lucy had the CORRECT father's names but just different occupations ?

Were the couple's ages right ?

Also if you found a Thomas and Lucy Baker in Portsea in 1851 how do you know she was previously STOVOLD

Have you got any of the children's birth certificates showing the mother as formerly STOVOLD ?

Mike,
I don't know what Thomas' father's name is. Lucy's father's name was correct. It said Lucy was of "full age" when in fact she was 18. I guess if they eloped they could have lied about all this. I take your point - I don't know that the Lucy in Portsea was previously a Stovold, although it seemed likely it was the couple who married there.

Ann,
No, this is not my Lucy Stovold - she was born in Elstead. I have all the info on her. It's Thomas Baker I need info on going back to birth & is parents. Thanks anyway.

Mike,
I don't have children's birth certs, only looked in parish records for baptisms. Don't think it gave maiden name. One interesting fact - their eldest wasn't baptised until they moved to Farncombe , Surrey (aged 8). Might indicate local vicar wouldn't baptise if parents were unmarried.

Did you atually purchase the marriage cert, it does seem odd that the marriage 1844........baker/stovold is not them, the reason I ask is that there is no other couple Thomas/Lucy on the 1851 census in any county apart from 1 couple aged 20 and 21.

Mike,
I've given you some duff info there - eldest son was bapt in Elstead, but still when aged 8 - same day as 5th child. Wonder why No's 2,3 & 4 were bapt before him?

Staying on your train of thought and taking into account that census ages seem to be -1 in a lot of cases.........The vicar in Elstead would not marry a pregnant woman.............or as you say they deided to make a break for it because of the pregnancy.

Full age only tells us they were over 21(most cases not true) this was not a factor in Law as the Legal age for a female was 12years!

If your theory is right that they were not married, then the children would be registered in mother's name.

Wonder if this is one of them ?

EDIT :... although Elstead and Godalming would actually come under Guildford registration district.

Ann
I checked parish records so could view certificate. I thought I checked a later census & found them, but I will have to go over my stuff again. It's been some time since I worked on this tree. The occupations given on cert were shipwrights & sailmakers, which fits with Portsea area but not with them, unless they lied.
