You do not say if you have the marriage cert. of Alexander and Mary McEwan. If you don't have it I would start by buying a copy.

This should give you his age so you can work out his date of birth and also his father's occupation so you can check with the census records to see if any fit.
Scotlands records give much more info than English ones so they are always worth investing in.
