Grace

Grace Report 19 Jan 2008 18:07

A relative of my husband, Susannah Cranfield in the 1851 census aged 11yrs. Recently an Aunt of his passed away, and in her late husbands bible was found a card telling of her death in Canada in 1893 aged 48, loving sister of Emma Cranfield, she did not have a sister Emma, but a sister in law with that name, this would be my husbands GtGt Grandmother. The problem I have is I cannot find any info on that surname let alone her, any advice would be very welcome

Grace Report 19 Jan 2008 22:44

Sorry for the delay Lynne, her husband was Henry Cranfield, he was illegitimate, I have proof of that. Susannah definately went to Canada, I have a printed card with info. of her death and my husbands father talked about his mother talking of an Aunt of hers who lived in Canada. Thank you for your help. Beth

Sorry yes I had gone to bed!! Yes Henry is Gt Grandfather and Susannah is his Aunt, the? is why did she go to Canada, and her surname is now Delsall, of which I can find no answers, did she get married before she went, or when she was over there, her "memory "card says interred in Canada and grave no, but canada is a big Place. JaneyCanuck Report 29 Jan 2008 00:15

Ah, Grace, what you didn't tell me was that there was a whole thread underway with info in it already -- you just asked me your question in that other thread, rather than doing as Janice suggested. Lucky I was too busy to get right on to it ...

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 29 Jan 2008 00:19

For ref, what I had in the other thread.

I just had a quick scan of deaths in Ontario in 1893, at Ancestry, and there's no Susan* who looks like she might be Delsall. The Cdn originals are horrific in many cases, the scans worse, and the transcriptions much worser, but nothing looks likely.

I also checked in Ontario for marriages of Susan* to Delsall, and any Delsall marriage at all. No such name. Nor in the 1901/1911 censuses. Closest we get is Dalzell in British Columbia in 1911.

The provinces all have to be checked individually, at their vital stats sites, for BMDs.

Aha. The 1871 census at Ancestry is index / head of household only:

Name: Samuel Delsall
Event: Living
Year: 1871
Province: New Brunswick
County: St. John
Place: St John
Comments: Cabinetmaker.
Source: New Brunswick Directory for 1871, The Genealogical Research Library, Toronto, 1984.
Volume/Page: 179
Note: The province and county are associated with the location of the record source and in some cases may not be the same as the place where the event occured.

There are quite a few Dalzells in the NB death records, including a couple of Samuels who could be that 1871 Samuel. I'm suspecting that that's what the name really was.

Someone at ancestry.ca has entered a name correction for one of them in the 1901 census -- I saw the marriage record for this couple, but obviously Susie isn't your Susannah since she's living in 1901:

Name: George T Dalzell
[George Young Dalzell]
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Married
Age: 47
Birth Date: 3 Jun 1853
Birthplace: Nb
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's Name: Sussie
...

It might be worth contacting that Ancestry user to see whether s/he knows anything. If you PM me that email address, I can send a message through ancestry.ca asking that the user contact you.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 29 Jan 2008 00:28

I'm not clear on the timeline.

- Susannah Cranfield in the 1851 census aged 11yrs.
- her death in Canada in 1893 aged 48

11 in 1851 = ~1840
48 in 1893 = ~1845

I'd want to make sure we have the same/right person.

This is the only one FreeBMD has:

Births Mar 1844
CRANFIELD Susannah Halstead 12 11_

and this is the only marriage:

Marriages Dec 1859
Cranfield Susannah Lexden 4a 527
Pudney James Lexden 4a 527

Both in Essex, so I'd assume them to be both the same person, and to be your Susannah, from the info already in this thread relating to Emma Cranfield in Essex. No subsequent marriage by any Susannah Pudney to a Delsall or anything like.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 29 Jan 2008 02:50

So these are the Dalsells in the 1881 Cdn census -- available only at familysearch.org, free of charge:

Frederick DALSELL Male Irish 20 New Brunswick Cabinet Maker Presbyterian

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 29 Jan 2008 02:53

And then there are the Delzells:

Ontario:

John DELZELL M Male Scottish 50 Scotland Farmer C. Presbyterian
Isabella DELZELL M Female Scottish 39 Scotland C. Presbyterian
Margret DELZELL Female Scottish 16 O C. Presbyterian
John DELZELL Male Scottish 14 O C. Presbyterian
Samuel DELZELL Male Scottish 13 O C. Presbyterian
Agness DELZELL Female Scottish 11 O C. Presbyterian
Robert DELZELL Male Scottish 8 O C. Presbyterian
Jessie DELZELL Female Scottish 6 O C. Presbyterian
Mary DELZELL Female Scottish 4 O C. Presbyterian
Isabella DELZELL Female Scottish 2 O C. Presbyterian
James DELZELL Male Scottish C. Presbyterian

But no Delsalls.

You're definitely reading that name correctly?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 29 Jan 2008 02:57

Now this is interesting, at

http://www.findmypast.com/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action

DELSALL George
age 47 M
date of departure 1893
departure port Liverpool
destination country Canada
destination port Quebec

That almost looks like someone travelling out to Canada because of the death of a family member.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 29 Jan 2008 03:04

There are two households in the UK census:

In 1851:

Betty Delsall 38
Betty Delsall 7
John Delsall 2
Sarah Delsall 10

in Warrington

in 1841:

Amos Delsall 10 Mo
John Delsall 30
Mary Delsall 30

in Chorlton

BUT in fact, both of those records actually read KELSALL, if you ask me.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 29 Jan 2008 03:26

More Delsalls in outbound passenter lists:

DELSALL 29 F 1914 Liverpool USA New York
DELSALL F 7 M 1914 Liverpool USA New York
DELSALL H 30 M 1914 Liverpool USA New York

But there just aren't any in England!
