Hi,
I am looking for some help on my Grandparents ancestors. My Grand father was Anthony Gaughan who I believe was born Clydebank 20/01/1917 and died 22/12/1989. He married Catherine McDaid (born around 1920 I think). I believe they married in Clydebank 1938. I cant find any details of my grandfathers parents but believe he had 3 sisters Bridget, Celia, Cathleen & 3 brothers Francis, Martin & Michael.

Any help would be really appreciated!

Andy

Andrew....Both surnames will probably lead you back to Ireland....
You may be as well to check out 1911 Scottish Census for the famlies...Mc Daid is not so difficult but the Gaughan surname has a few variations .

Optimistic Report 5 Apr 2011 20:16

I believe they may be of Irish descent, but don't know how far back it goes, I didn't know the Gaughan would have many variations?? I tried scotlands people for the 1911 census but no joy! :(
Do you know an easy way to check Irish records??

Andrew, there's a spelling change to begin with but the marriage certificate will give you both sets of parents names as well as mothers' maiden names and occupations of the fathers.
Names and addresses of witnesses are also included as Scottish certifcates give you a lot more information.

With all the parents details you will rapidly be abe to look them up on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.

£7.00 for 30 credits.
1 credit to view a page of up to 24 search results.
5 credits to view / save / download the certificate.

So with a little luck you could search and view 5 certificates for a total cost of £7.00 all from the comfort of your own computer............

No Year Surname (M) Forename (M) Surname (F) Forename (F) District City/ County/ MR GROS Data

1 1938 GAUGHAN ANTHONY MCDADE CATHERINE OLD OR WEST KILPATRICK /DUNBARTON 501/00 0334

Unfortunately this certificate falls just outside the 1855 - 1935 cut off for viewing online marriage certificates so you will have to order it.

£12.00 from Scotlandspeople.

If you want to check the 1911 census, it will be a lot easier if you have the parents names from the marriage certificate to search for.

Just received my Grandfathers birth cert showing father as John Gaughan married 3rd March 1899 in Preston! His occupation in Railway Platelayer. I cant really read the mothers name, I think it's Sarah or Norah Welsh? Is there any site where I could find free info on marriages in 1899 in Preston?? Im hoping details on their marriage would give their DOB's

Could anyone look up the 1891 or 1901 census for me please for John Gaughan & Norah Welsh marriage 3rd March 1899 Preston?

Source Citation: Parish: Glasgow Hutchesontown; ED: 3; Page: 26; Line: 13; Roll: CSSCT1901_307; Year: 1901.

You could look at Catherine's birth on Scotlandspeople (births prior to 1910 can be viewed online) to check if this is the correct family.

I don't see a marriage on Freebmd for John and Norah yet. Will keep looking.

Thanks to rootgatherer & Sorcha I have a copy of the 1901 census and the copy of Catherine Gaughan's birth cert. Catherine & my Grandfather Anthony Birth cert both confirm date of John & Norah's marriage date but I cant find the marriage cert?
I now have John Gaughan married to Norah Welsh 03/03/1899 Preston.
Parents to:
Catherine Gaughan born 11/12/1899 Glasgow
Anthony Gaughan born 28/01/1917 Clydebank
Michael Gaughan born 20/01/1922 Clydebank

Any help on the marriage cert would be appreciated as this should show John & Norah's birthplace and dates. The census shows them as Irish but I dont know where in Ireland & their ages suggest John born 1880 & Norah 1879 :-S

rootgatherer Report 3 Jun 2011 10:22

I still can't see a marriage on Freebmd for John and Norah. I am wondering if they actually married or just gave that date and place to save face? Is the date and place of the marriage consistent on all the birth certificates please?

This may be a red herring but there is this marriage on Scotlandspeople. Could Norah have been Bridget Norah but known as Norah?

1904 GAUGHAN JOHN WALSH BRIDGET MORNINGSIDE EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 685/06 0301
1904 GAUGHAN JOHN WALSHE BRIDGET MORNINGSIDE EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 685/06 0301

If John and Norah died in Scotland then their death registration will give their parents names if the informant knew the details.

It wasn't uncommon for a couple who married after they had children to marry outwith the area where they lived and were already thought to be married.

I have 2 certs for Catherine & Anthony and both marriage dates exactly the same even though they were born 18 years apart, I don't have the death dates for John & Norah, I have no idea what so ever except between 1922 & 1953. I will get onto Scotland's people as I think as they settled here they must have died here but there are so many possibilities?? After struggling to find the marriage cert I have considered the possibility they never really got wed after all!

Thanks Catherine, thats a real help. Its like looking for a needle in a haystack! John fathered a Michael in 1922 after the war but maybe he wasn't the father :-0 At least this gives me start for Norah. I checked out Scotlands people, her parents are Patrick Welsh & Bridget Schall? Norah's death 23/02/1947 Cerebral Heamorage, signed by Martin Gaughan, one of her oldest sons.

Hi Andy,
There are two births on rootsireland for a Honora Walsh variant of Welsh in 1873 and 1875 with father being Patrick and mother Bridget in county Mayo.
The surname Gaughan is also most prevalent in the west of Ireland around Mayo but as you say it is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Regards,
Sorcha

John Gaughan (born 1880c Ireland) My Great Grandfather is causing me a real headache! He married Norah Welsh 03/03/1899 Preston England (according to daughter Catherine and son Anthony's birth cert). I know he was born in Ireland but still looking for confirmation. I cant find any registration on his marriage :-( As he settled in Clydebank near Glasgow I have spent a lot of credits on Scotlands people trying to find his death date that should give me his parents names. I have had no joy but after a few phone calls to relatives tonight I have found he died in South Africa when working for McAlpine's Contractors. His occupation on Norah's death cert shows General Contractors Foreman.
