Hit a brick wall with my Glass family, gone back to James(1801) who had 6 children, Margaret(1821) Isabella(1826) Thomas(1829) Mary(1831) Jane(1837) and my Gt.Gt.Gran Hannah(1836 they were all born Tweedmouth, berwick upon Tweed, northumberland. I have some info on Margaret and Jane but the trail has gone cold with the others. Hannah had a illigitimate son in 1859 but after 1861 I loose track of her. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Also, do you have any marriages for them?
I wonder if this is Isabella?

One or two in 1851. I see your problem, they are very elusive (I was going to say a real pain but such an obvious joke is beneath me of course!)

Jane is recorded as visitor rather than daughter, might be an error.

Do you know what happened to the illegitimate child? Any chance he is with her after 1861?

Hi All,
thannk you, I agree with you the Glasses are a pane/pain.
Yes Jan the Glasses you have listed in 1841 census Father James and Mother Margaret are my family.
Living in the same street ,same time are another Glass family Mother Ann(1791) widowed and children Mary,George and Alexander.
Also in the 1851 census living nearby yet another Glass family, parents John and Isabella, children Mary Ann,Isabella M and Ann . Prob Isabella M. is the marriage you found.
I feel sure all these familys must be connected but cant find out how.

Jeanette Report 11 Dec 2009 21:45

In reply to your other questions Hannah is listed in the 1861 census as a servant at West Newbiggin Farm, Norham,Berwick then I loose track of her.
Her illigitimate son James Glass(1859-1899) married Ann Matthewson and had 2 children Daniel and my Gran Jane Marshall Glass (1892-1923) . My Gran died young my Mother was adopted and this is where the trail ends. I feel sure there must be Glasses out there who are related to me, but where?
Out of the 6 children Margaret and James had I have been able to find out that Margaret remained unmarried. Jane married a Daniel Marshall and moved to Newcastle and had 5 children. But I cant trace the others. Hope I have explained properly. I would love to find out what happened to Hannah(1836) in particular. Also Isabella(1826) Thomas(1829) and Mary(1831) ny help most appreciated

Have you considered the possibility that one or more of them moved to Scotland? It's so close to the border, you never know.

Thanks Jan, to get that info would I have to join a Scottish site?

brummiejan Report 13 Dec 2009 17:02

I think you have to use a site called Scotland's people - which is pay per view. As far as I know they do not have an equivalent of freebmd. Will do a thread just to check - don't go away!

Reply from Glitterbaby:

Civil registration began in Scotland in 1855.

Scotlandspeople will go up to 1908 for births - 100 year closure - but it will give you the details for later births - certs will be £10.

Family search is quite good

Scotlandspeople do have Old Parish Registers for BMd's 1538 to 1854

I'd give it a go!
