Help to find the death record of my Gt.Gt.Grandmother's first husband and the birth record of her son - in Ballarat Australia.

Thought I'd give all info. if anyone could help.
Emma Grimes sailed to Australia in June 1859 with her husband John aboard Scottish Chief.
She returned to England Jan.1866 with her son Ernest aged 3.
On 1871 census in Birmingham she is a widow and Ernest's place of birth is Ballarat.
I am therefore searching for Ernest's birth and John's death. I have tried Victria Online records with no luck.

Searching the Victoria indexes, I get one result for Ernest Grimes child of John and Emma born 1861-1865 -- but I'm not going to pay to see it! It seems they may also have had another child during that period.

There doesn't seem to be a death for John -- but then, perhaps he hadn't died when Emma left Australia, and "widow" was not completely accurate.

There are 3 John Grimes deaths in Victoria 1881-1891, for instance.

The census for 1871 Birmingham and marriage in Leicester are correct for my family.
Emma's maiden name was Sculthoupe.

I think you should widen your death search for the father, not just Ballarat
Was his occupation 'Miner' ?

There is only 1 death in Victoria for a John Grimes (he was aged 17 months), up until 1888.

As Janey said, are you sure that he died, maybe Emma returned to England because of the harsh conditions of that time.

Oops, I was editing above as I searched for John pre-marriage in England.

I think he's the son of Edward and Ann -- note that his son Ernest's second name was Edward (and the other son seems to have been named for Emma's brother Frederick).

Looks like that year appears to be 1870
