I am trying to find info on my paternal Grandma. Her name was Lilly (the spelling varies even on family documents) I do know she was from Liverpool b.10/9/1868.
The family bible says she had a brother Edward Hall b22/11/1852 and a sister, Mary Anne Hall no dob but died 8/1/1853.
(I must add here that some of the family think she may have been born Stuart or Stewart and adopted by someone called Hall. It isn't easy is it? lol)
Lilly married Walter Parry from Hengoed, Oswestry at Toxteth Park and they lived in Hyde Cheshire.
I am trying fo find out where she came from originally, her family, her date of death (which was sometime in 1944 I believe)
I can't find anything in the BMD apart from the marriage record.
Over to you good people! I thank you in advance for any and all help and advice you can give me.

To Brummiejan
I think this is where the Hall name comes in. Sarah is shown as "Nurse" I did wonder about the Mary mentioned here. Would not be Lily's sister as she was already dead by '81 according to family bible.
I do have the records you have sent but I do appreciate your help! Thank you!
I think you are right about the marriage cert it is on my "go get" list which is ever expanding :-(
Thanks again,
Colin

Hi Colin,

Just checked Lillian Stewart Chambers and she is still with her mother in 1891, so unfortunately I don't think she is your Grandma.

Do you have your Grandma's marriage certificate? If you don't it maybe worth getting it and seeing who she put as her father and also seeing who the witnesses were.... sometimes these were family members, that would really help!

You can order certificates at The General Register, it's the cheapest place and hopefully it may help with the search.

MaureenNY:- Please excuse my ignorance but how do you associate this entry with my Lilly? Am I missing something?
The spelling could be right as some of my cousins have this as their middle name and tradition says it came from Grandma Parry (Lilly)
Thanks for helping!

Thank you Dee. I am going to get the cert and thank you for the advice about where to get it.

All you people are wonderful! I've never had a reply on a request site so quick! Let alone this many.
Thank you all!
Colin.

Hi Colin,
I was just going back one census to the Sarah Hall that Brummiejan found in 1881 with a Lillie and Mary Hall as boarders.
She has a Mary Stuart with her in 1871 and I thought perhaps someone researching on your side of the family may have extrapolated and decided that the Mary in 1881 was the same person.

And if that made any sense to anyone....

Maureen

Edit: Just cleaned up my post to correct census data.

BatMansDaughter

BatMansDaughter Report 24 Jun 2010 17:51

Sorry I deleted.

I think Maureen that you are on the right tracks and that the 1871 Sarah is the same lady in the 1881 census. I noted that Mary Stuart was a nurse child on the 1871 census and this would tie in with Sarah Halls occupation on the 1881 census.

But for the life of me I can't see them in 1861.

EDIT>>>>>>>> just checked the 1871 and 1881 census for Sarah Hall........ it's the same address!!

It would be interesting to see who was living at 22 Portwood Street in 1861... I can see it available on Find My Past but unfortunately I have no subs or credits left.

Colin, sometimes we have to go further back before we can make sense of the findings.

Thanks Maureen. I wonder if the 1861 census that we're looking for is one of the water damaged batches?
