Started this thread yesterday but got stuck ....

Hi I have found my grandpas family back to 1891 cencus where William Hodges ( 1848 born Twerton Somerset) is living with wife and children and his brother Henry Hodges in Bristol ( also Twerton 1846c) . I just can't find the brothers on earlier census records where I was hoping to find their parents ...Has anyone any ideas on why this would be ?...

Brilliant thats him ... he was a cabinet maker and so was his son and my grandpa . Just been looking on ancestry at 1851 but no joy so far . I think its the place of birth thats confusing as Twerton on avon could be recorded as bath / Somerset / Bristol ? and in the 1881 its been copied as Tiverton . Thanks so much for the cabinet maker .. just printed it out and see on that birth is recorded as Bath

1851 Census
think I found him the birth year is a bit out ... and theres no Henry I'm hoping Thomas is Williams brother Henry ? middle name or something? and again the birth year seems abit out as Henrys 44 in the 1881 record so I don't know how to def check its him . But William and Thomas are both down as being born in Towton Somerset !

Thanks for your help :)

Double checked 1851 ( the last posting I did ) and don't think that is them now :( because the birth years too far out .... thought had to be because of Towton ,Somerset , close just not quite as the're 3 years out on birth year and I was taking a long shot on Thomas being Henry as it was

If anyone has got the time to have a look through this I'd appreciate it loads .. found William in 1861 now thanks to rootgatherer but I don't think the marriage is right maybe as my mum was sure his wifes maiden name was Orchard ... but I can't find another marraiage ..so maybe

In 1881 Williams brother Henry is living with him so I wanted to find them both together on 1851 cencus ... and thats where I'm stuck . I thought I might have found them but as you'll see dates are out

Just a tip - don't keep changing your name back and forth, it's very confusing as one reads through the thread!

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 10 Sep 2009 00:17

I see you've changed your board name from fledgling - now I'm sure I added to a thread for you yesterday - where is that one?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 10 Sep 2009 00:22

Unfortunately, here's brother Henry in 1861:

Name: Henry Hadges
Age: 14
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1847
Relation: Servant
Gender: Male
Where born: Twerton, Somerset, England

Civil parish: Bristol St James
County/Island: Gloucestershire

in a rather unbelievably large household! Oh, lord, it's one of Ancestry's hash jobs (click on the "head of household" ...). All the heads of household were entered as "father" rather than head by the enumerator. Those are all different households, and Geo Hurley doesn't have a dozen of each parent.

Henry is a shop boy in the actual Geo Hurley household - Hurley is a baker employing 3 men and 1 boy, i.e. Henry.

I was wondering, AoGG ... there was that second one today, now gone, and it didn't quite sound like this was the first, but it was the only one that came up on a search for William Hodges Twerton.

One post per topic. Only. And please don't delete threads if people have added work to them, just for future ref.

Whats all this with my name .. I'll get paranoid ! I started on this site recently it came up with my real name ... and then I thought I'd give myself a 'community name' fledgling which is currently my name . Re you replying to another thread .. that was one regarding another family member which is still up and running I'd put on tips and prob this one unwittingly so deleated it !
Re Janeys tip - I have not changed my name back and forth ... I simply gave myself a community name and too be honest that tip isn't especially useful or necessary.

Please read guidelines for message board use .. cause I'm not going to be intimidated or overly questioned re my name . What is the point ?

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 10 Sep 2009 00:28

the point is that you are confusing people - you start off this thread as fledgling and then reply as Emma - I for one am leaving you to it now - you have changed it back again - people just donlt do that
