I am trying to find a William Locock, married Emily Agnes Laker in 1916, Southwark in London. I cannot find his birth. I found from Ancestry his father was called Alfred, but as there are that many Williams and Alfred's I am having difficulty finding this family. Thanks in advance :)

Madmeg Report 27 Feb 2010 01:04

Well, we're all going to have the same problem unless we have extra information, such as Alfred's occupation. You can get this from the marriage cert of William and Emily Agnes.

Let's hope he's a Bee Keeper or a Vicar :-)

VickiWrathmall87 Report 27 Feb 2010 01:06

I can't view their cert on Ancestry, I can only see the summary on there. I think my subscription is too low for me to view it. Does anyone else on here have more than the basic subscription to view the certificate?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 27 Feb 2010 05:33

Vicki

No-one can view a birth certificate, nor a marriage or a death certificate

You see the quarter and year of registration, place of registration, and 2 numbers (vol and page numbers) on ancestry

...... or on www.freebmd.org.uk, which is the FREE site

Then you have to BUY the certificate from www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Each certificate will cost £7

Do NOT under any circumstances order certificates through ancestry ....... they will charge you much more than £7

A marriage certificate will tell you the ages of bride and groom, marital status at date of marriage, occupation, address, names of the two fathers, and names of the witnesses, as well as the place where they were married.

Wow thank you Dea & Choccy! I wonder where William is on the birth records though I couldn't find his for 1892/3, so will look at 1894 as well. I don't have access to 1911 census and I have been stuck all last night looking for this family! I am eternally grateful xx

VickiWrathmall87

VickiWrathmall87 Report 27 Feb 2010 18:27

I am very confused as to where William would be on the 1901 census, especially as he is only 7! Could he be at boarding school or with grandparents?

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 27 Feb 2010 19:18

This could be him. At first sight it does look like Alcock until I realised that the person completing the census does capital "A" like a large round small "a". It doesn't quite look like Locock, more like Llcock. But the person did have 18 pages of names to write. Although the place is described as an Asylum, it is in fact a children's hospital.

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 27 Feb 2010 19:31

I'm not too certain now that it was a hospital. There are about 350 children age 5-15, about 8 teachers, 10 "nurse domestic"s, and 30 laundrymaids, cooks etc.

EDIT - from the staff it doesn't sound like they were a problematic lot of residents.

VickiWrathmall87

VickiWrathmall87 Report 27 Feb 2010 19:50

Thanks for that MadMeg, quite possibly him, I was confused as I thought he'd have been with his mum and sister at that age and he's not on 1901 census with them.

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 27 Feb 2010 20:06

You can possibly get the records of the establishment (for a fee) from the main library of that area or an archives office. They might tell you how he came to be there and why. My guess is it's some sort of boarding school - a lot of children of men serving in the forces were placed in such schools.

I am looking for Alfred's parents' marriage if anyone can help? His father is called Henry Locock (born 1832) and his wife is Phillippa. They have very possibly married in the Devon/Cornwall area. I am struggling to find a marriage for them, so I would be very grateful if anyone can help? xx
