Hi Sylvia,

It seems strange, I don't know what goes on with these Census but they make it hard for a person, nothing is as it seems. You know with the Luke family, I have checked out the 1871 Census with all of the Hannay children on it and I agree Luke and Martha can't possibly be the parents. I found the marriage of James Hannay and Martha Batt in 1855 Pontypool, James died in sept 1869 Newport M and Martha later died 1899 as Martha Herridge Pontypridd (62). The children that are theres are George 1852? Publow Somerset / Madeleine 1858 Publow Somerset / Ann 1856 Publow somerset (All three found on IGI to James and Martha. James 1865 Risca on Census / Edwin 1868.Risca on Census also. Henry 1852 married Ann Lavinia Evans 1871 Newport M mar qtr most likely his brother and wife which leaves none of the children belonging to Luke and Martha. Edwin is the only possibility, what do you think!!! Mind you I know that these can be wrong to but more likely to be right that what the corrections are which you found.
Another thing with Luke, the ages are so different aren't they, I found his death in 1911 Pontypridd (62) which would mean he was born in 1849 but have him down as 6 on 1851 Census - I know, I know that I cant trust everything they put down so I will leave it at that and yes we have to have the correct family, but it seems to take time and a lot of hard work on your part.

Is there one more thing you can possibly do for me, Frederick Herridge B1813 Mere Wiltshire, I have the last 1881 Census, he was living with his wife Mary Ann at Tatts Yard, Westbury with their two grandchildren Ernest Doddington and Samuel George Trowbridge, I think Fred died in Mar qtr 1901 and I was wondering if an 1891/1901 was possible please, that is if he or his wife were alive in 1901.

Thanks

Julia

so much depends on what the people themselves knew

When you consider that most of them were illiterate, then it begins to make sense ............. they counted on their fingers, or knew when the child was born by virtue of some outside factor.

The census taker was probably only a little more literate .. especially in a small village or area. So he often wouldn't know how to spell properly, and his geographical knowledge was slight. If he didn't know the name of a village, he might say "Where's that?, answer "near Northwich" ..... he recognizes Northwich, so down goes Northwich on the census!

As for Luke suddenly being born in Somerset instead of Wiltshire ............... that's probably because whoever was giving the information assumed he was born in the same place as Martha.

His birth year change ... again could be due to wrong information being given by someone else.

The information on the death certificate is given by the informant, who only knows what he/she has been told or believes. So age is often a guesstimate!

I don't know why the one Hannay child had been changed to Herridge ........ it doesn't make sense to me looking at the other censuses.

I think we do have the right family ....... but I'm always open to changing my mind!

Of course the only way to be sure would be to get certificates ................. and I don't know if that is an option for you. Are these guys close enough to your direct line for it to be worth it?

They certainly test my ability to think outside the box!!

Hi Sylvia,
I tried the BMD and IGI for Ann Herridge/Hannay and nothing came up in Risca but did for Ann Hannay in Publow, where-ever this person got the information from is beyond me.
As you say you are always open to changing your mind, as I am and I understand what you are saying after reading your message.
No they are not important enough to get birth certificates but would be nice to know the correct ones if you know what I mean.

If he died in the March quarter 1901, it was probably before the census was taken on the night of 31 March

there is no lead to who gave the information for that name change, and it is the only one of the Hannay children that was changed.

I think it was a hopeful change by someone. May be they are claiming someone they hope belongs to them! The name may have been changed in earlier days .......... these days ancestry asks for information re the change, and after it is made a click on the yellow triangle takes you to a screen that says why the change and the ancestry email of the person who did it. So you can contact that person.

I know what you mean about wanting to be accurate ......... most of us do want that, although some people seem to be more interested in having vast numbers of "ancestors" on their trees, correct or not!

But sometimes, one can only make a guess at what actually happened ... although it is often an educated guess, not one from out in left field. There's also what I call a "gut" feeling.

In some cases, even though it seems a wild guess, all the facts seem to point in one direction only.

I would mark the unsure ones with an asterisk or something so that you can go back and check at a later date ........ as more and more records come onto the web things might become a little clearer. But of course all the records only give a snapshot of one moment in time ........ the censuses tell you what a family was doing once every 10 years for example!
