I thought he probably was, in view of the fact that only the grandparents were referred to in the book..............

Mary and Sarah would seem the most obvious candidates........

I believe he was illegitimate. As the book co written by his granddaughter said he was born at his mother's parent pub the Brown Cow pub James Hirst and Sarah Maria Hirst. All I need to find out now is about James Hirst were he came from because I think he is the link to my family. Fern -x-.

Logically, a ten-year old boy would be with his parents..........unless he was illegitimate, or one (or both) of the parents had died.
