Also I notice you mentioned that there was some kind of declaration on the certifcate - was this adding or removing the father's name? I have one from 1911 where the parents pretended to be married when they registered their son but didn't marry until about 6 months later but they then did a 'statutory declaration' to admit they weren't married and to remove the fathers name from the certificate. Seems very sad as the poor child only lived for 6 weeks and this was all done months after he died. Dont see the point of it!

Anyway - so if you could type up all the details word for word from the birth certificate it might help us to help you.

FamilyFogey Report 20 Feb 2008 14:47

Ok but Pauline you say you have her birth certificate.

We cannot find an entry for a Dorothia Tomassi in 1910 but there is one in 1910 for an Andonia Tomasso - so is it possible for you to type up the exact details from the birth certificate from 1910 so we can fully understand everything?

Is it possible that Dorothia was registered as Andonia after her mother and then known as Dorothia/Dorothy for the rest of her life?

In the post that Pauline has just made, she say the mother and father were
her mother was called Andonia Tomasso and her dad was Ricardo Gerardo G tomasoa

At first you may think that Tomasso was her married name, but from the look up the other day there was a Andonia Tomasso born in 1910 and on the same page there was Ricardo Gerardo G tomasoa
So maybe they were cousins or something

Pauline

PLEASE.........help us to help you.........

Tell us, word for word, EXACTLY what it says on the birth cert which you say you have.

Start at the left hand side, and work across it.......column by column.

We want to help........but we need your co-operation.

Pauline you said from your first post that you had Dorothia's birth certificate and that there was some amendment or joining of names - that there was an x and Tomasso Richards put down.

Please please give us all the details from the birth certificate!

Could it be that
Dorothy was registered as Andonia, in 1910 and that she was a twin, and both children were given the names of their parents!!!
The one sure way to find out is to purchase both birth certificates

Pauline

Pauline Report 20 Feb 2008 15:10

i am going to do some more digging because i think that my nans father and mother where cousins and i am going to retrieve the birth cert. i will repost when i have it.

Ok - finally got to the bottom of it - I was just puzzled as you were talking about having her birth certificate and mentioning this amendment or joining of names on the certificate.

I suggest you copy the certificate information found for Andonia:

Births Mar 1910
TOMASSO Andonia Kingston 2a 443

Then go to www.gro.gov.uk and follow the links and instructions to purchasing/ordering a certificate.

The details to purchase the certs are

Ricardo Gerardo G Tomaso b Mar qtr 1910 Holborn 1b page 576

Andonia Tomasso b Mar qtr 1910 Kingston 2a page 443

Good luck

FamilyFogey Report 20 Feb 2008 15:19

I also now understand what you mean about the x - from the actual register page there is a Richard Geraldo G Tomaso born in Holborn in 1910 - his entry has also been put in under the spelling of Tomasso.

I do not believe they are twins as they are registered in totally different districts.

Pauline - your best bet is to order the certificate for Andonia from 1910.

Did your Gt Gt gran have any brothers or sisters, and when and who did she marry?

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 20 Feb 2008 15:43

The name Andonia doesn't exist in Italy as far as I know - the nearest is Antonia.

However, in the south of Italy the approximate pronunciation of Antonia would be Andonia, so perhaps the parents didn't know how to spell it. That does suggest that the birth was registered in England, though, because an Italian registrar would know the correct spelling.

Alternatively, maybe it's a Greek name?

If we look at all the people with the surname Tomasso or similar born in Kingston, there are quite a few, and some of them were born after mid-1911, when the mother's maiden name was included in the index.

I wonder if this is Dorothy's sister Bett?

Births Dec 1911 (>99%)
Tomassi Benedetta , mmn Saviano, Kingston 2a 819

Can't see a Joe (Giuseppe) or John (Giovanni).

There are a couple of other Tomassi/o children born in Kingston with mmn De or Di Placito.

There are two possible marriages in Kingston between a Tomassi/o and a Saviano/Saviana or a De or Di Placito. Here they are:

Marriages Sep 1896 (>99%)

Saviano Anna Rosa Kingston 2a 760
Tomassi Vincenzo Kingston 2a 760

Marriages Dec 1905 (>99%)

DI PLACITO Raffaele Kingston 2a 875
TOMASSO Maria Kingston 2a 875

The second one can't be right, because the man's name is
Di Placito, whereas it should be the woman's.

FamilyFogey

FamilyFogey Report 20 Feb 2008 17:17

There is another Di Placito marriage - just with slight spelling differences!

Marriages Dec 1891
Diplacido Antonia Maria Kingston 2a 646
Tomassi Angelo Kingston 2a 646

I would wonder if they are brother & sister intermarriages? The spelling does seem to interchange between Tomasso and Tomassi perhaps just due to registrar errors?

FamilyFogey

FamilyFogey Report 20 Feb 2008 17:20

Also that entry may well be the parents of Andonia if she was named after her mother - the pronounciations being down to the regional dialect from Italy and registrar error?
