Russell, Yes Elizabeth may have lived with a Stoner, married or not, so that was the name she was known by.

Maybe William Miles was married so they couldn't at the time. And when his wife died they could.

On the source for the suggested children, I have transcribed Stoner BMDs (see www.stoner.org.uk).

There were two families (Stoner/Cleary & Stoner/Needham) in Leeds district having children up to 1900. By the time William Miles was born those couples had been married for 20 years.

William Stoner marriages are listed on FreeBMD for 1906 and 1907. I guessed the two births prior to that - with Miles or M - were yours. Frederick G M you know was yours. Sidney H M had mother's maiden name Nicholls. In fact there was another birth - Emily Louise in 4Q1906 and I wouldn't include her or Maria in your family. They may well have belonged to a William.

Hi Alan

I am ordering the birth certs for Maria & Sidney to confirm parentage, however, I didn't know about
Emily Loise!

I've had an e-mail from Len Edwards re Stoner/Nicholls link. There is a suggestion that Harry Stoner could be the father of Frederick.

Thanks so far.

Hi Selena
Got a result on the Stoner/Miles marriage. She was aged 45 (1918), widowed. Middle name Rhoda. With that, I got the Stoner connection. M to James Henry in Brighton 2b/467, Sep 1890.
Followed that to JH birth, Brighton, 2b/211, Sep 1872.
Am now targetting 1891 census. No joy yet.

It's given me a fresh inputus.

Hi Alan.

Finally rec'd Eliz Stoner/Wm Miles M/C. Middle name Rhoda. Then traces M to James Henry Stoner
2b/467 1890. If I'm right, James H was born 2b/211. Sep 1872.
Can't find him on census.
Could you dbl check if i've got this correct. Would love to confirm, & add parents/Siblings/Grand Parents etc.
Cheers
Russell

So she married as Rhoda Elizabeth. Also confusing is a Rhoda Stoner death in 1Q1939 aged 66 Staincross 9c315. I'd previously assumed it was this Rhoda (she's listed as Rhoda in 1901) but seems it was probably Rhoda Dawson of the same age who married George Stoner in 1895. Can't see James Henry 1872's death anywhere.

I can offer some relatives.

Another genesre member Christine Ann Stoner (Leeds 1957) posted her name in 2006 and then I wrote "In 1Q1955 James H Stoner married Mabel Breckin Leeds 2c482 and had seven children.

James H was born 3Q1931 on June 9, Leeds North 9b293, the only child from the marriage in 3Q1930 of Charles G Stoner to Eliza Heald Leeds North 9b908.

Charles G died in 1Q1933 aged 42, Leeds N 9b455. Eliza's death may have been in 3Q1945 aged 59, Leeds 9b385. James Henry died 4Q1976 Leeds 5 0056.

So Charles G was born about 1891 and first married Effie M Hirst, 3Q1911 Leeds 9b872. They had one child in 4Q1918 Charles G Leeds 9b532 who died in the same quarter Leeds 9b957, and Effie died in 1Q1930 aged 40 Leeds North 9c338.

Now the jump to Sussex. The only Charles G or even Charles candidate at the right time was 1Q1891 Charles George Brighton.

The 1901 census has a family of 5, all born and living in Brighton.
James H 28 Head Bricklayer
Rhoda 28 Wife
Charles 10 Son
James H 7 Son
John 5 Son

and it looks as though in 3Q1890 James Henry Stoner married Rhoda Elizabeth Nicholls, Brighton 2b467.

Support for their move from Sussex to Leeds is given by the death in 1Q1939 Rhoda aged 66 Staincross 9c315. (## Now seems false ##)

The 1881 census has the family at 58 Goldstone Rd Hove, Sussex

STONER George M 54 M Cowfold, Sussex Head Agricultural Laborer
STONER Sariah M 44 F Cuckfield, Sussex Wife
STONER Mabel 2 F Brighton, Sussex Dau
STONER James H. 8 M Brighton, Sussex Son
and visitors
STONER William M 25 M Hamsey, Sussex
STONER Matilda M 32 F Southwick, Sussex

More than 50% of Stoners come from Sussex and Cowfold was one of the busiest areas. There was a christening at Cowfold of a George on 4/2/1827, son of John and Sarah who may have been Sarah Gibson but that marriage was in 1804."

Perhaps more likely are John Stoner and Sarah King who married at West Grinstead, 25 Jan 1820.

I look forward to hearing about the b/cs!

Lancs Ann, Using Ancestry if you view page source without paying you can sometimes relate family members. The Sussex James H in 1891 has
RG12_805_807-0481 and &pid=22964816

Rhoda E is
RG12_805_807-0481 and &pid=22997959

so the census ref ids are imprecise but similar. In other censuses the pids would be consecutive - for some reason they aren't in 1891.

In 1901
James &pid=6386945
Rhoda &pid=6386946
but for 1901 one can use the program at http://www.censusdecoder.com/ so it's really only 1841-1871 that it helps.

Russell, I forgot to add that George Stoner married Sarah Lindfield in 2Q1854 Cuckfield. The PR had George of full age, Sarah as a minor, and his father as John. I didn't record her father's name.

Hi Alan.
Gees you're a diamond in the rough!!
Here's where I'm Stuck!

Yuo said that John was married to Sarah King 25/1/20.
I've searched the 1841 Census that shows 2x Johns.
John (45) Parish of Cowfold, M to Susan (45)
Fillis (20), Phillip (15)
also listed later on same census
Phillip Stoner (73)
2nd search. Parish of Southwark
John (45), M to Jane (40), Betsy (25), Selina (1)
living at 10 Prices Terrace.

Have we blooped somewhere ref John/Sarah King, or are the above Census Johns not related!
Thanks
Russell

Alan.
I had a look for George Stoner (13) on the 1841 Census.

It looks like he could have been living on Groveland Farm. Also found another bunch of Stoners on same farm. Poss related!
They are:-
M Stoner (40) married to Sarah (45), children being
Saul? (20), Rebecca? (12), Carol (10), Pat w (8) & Emily (1)

Not entirely sure where we are fitting in, as I don't know where to research parrish records for marriages, births etc pre 1837.
Any advice pse.
Russell

My 1841 listing has over 50 John Stoners of all ages, about half in Sussex. So I doubt those two are related but I haven't checked. I'll email you a tree in a day or two if you give me an email address.

Hi John
I'm struggling with tracing the marriage between
George M & Sariah.
Can you advise please.

If found at least 8x George Stoner marriages, 2 to a Sarah Ann. Is it possible that this was Georges 2nd
marriage?
Regards
Russell

Alan Report 30 Mar 2008 09:37

Sariah is a mistake.

George Stoner married Sarah Lindfield in 2Q1854 Cuckfield 2b 173.

Pre-1837 you can try

I normally click on 'Search' at the top and use the next page.
