I'm wondering if my GGGGranddad John Richardson 1785 and Margaret ? 1790, both from Berwick on Tweed area, were married (to each other).Their offspring comprised Sarah, John, Peter, Catherine, William, George, James and Margaret; all born in Spittal on Tweed so I'd like to make an honest couple of them. Confirmation would be much appreciated. Kenn

Kenneth, I've looked at the IGI and there are no records. As they are before 1837, you will have to try and see if the local parish (if you know it) have any records in existence - alternatively, they may be able to give you the best advice on where to go if they do exist.

Thanks, Paula

Julie,

It didn't become compulsory until September 1911 for the mother's maiden name to be inserted upon the birth index. so unless you actually obtain a copy of the certificate, then you will not be able to check the mother's names.

To save money, if you can call your local registry office if you can find out the reference as they only charge £7.50 for a copy of a Certificate. If you only know the National Ref (the GRO), then if you are very lucky and polite to the other person on the end of the phone at the registry office, they may look up their records and send you a certificate out.

Thanks, Paula

Hello

If possible, could you please check Scotland 1881 and 1891 Census ( I have them in 1901 already) for a Rosetta Brownlee and household (possibly spelt Brownlees or Brownlie) born Ireland c1868/69.

Would expect her to be with parents Robert and Sarah, but thought it might be easier to search under the more unusual name of Rosetta.

Thanks.

Paula

Julie, just give one office a call and they will help you out - if it's not them, then they will point you in the right direction.

However, they are always extremely busy so if you just say you are making a courtesy call and you require a copy of a birth cert and explain what you are doing - this should put the ball in their court and hopefully they will help.

Thanks, Paula

Danielle,

There are over 300 John Bradley's !!! - do you have any other information - ie., father, mother or, if he was married, his wife's name.

thanks, Paula

David

David Report 4 Mar 2008 21:42

Unfortunately i will have to wait until i have purchased marriage certificate as he didn't marry until 1914, which won't help you and i don't know his parents names. Thank you anyway and i may be back in touch.

Kind regards

Danielle

Margaret,

Could this be her on the 1891 census - I have also searched under Rosetta Brownlee, Brownlees and Brownlie and also under her mother and father's names for the other census' but can find nothing at the moment (but I willl keep looking as they may have transcribed their names wrong).

Mmm, certainly the occupation fits as she is noted as a tailoress at 1901. It is possible her family were still in Ireland at 1891. Don't recall her having a sister Annie, but then again I may not have tracked down all the children in Ireland.

Certainly sounds a contender. Will keep the details, thanks.

Just a thought, could you have a look under Dumbartonshire for her parents as I have found one of her cousins with an address there in 1903 (on a death certificate)?

Paula Report 4 Mar 2008 22:19

Margaret,

Will have a look for you - I definitely cannot find anything for Brownlees, Brownlee or Brownlie in the 1881 census - so its a strong possibility that they came over just after the 1891 census which isn't strictly unusual and Rosetta came over first with her sister. But I will keep checking as sometimes they come up in a different place as to where you expect them to be.

Margaret,

I assume you have this... It seems to tally as in the 1901 census Rosetta is living with her mother, father and Sarah Lilley who is her neice.

Thanks, Paula, I've been at this hobby for a good few years now and I know all about ancestors turning up in strange places and with strange name spellings - they certainly like to keep us guessing.
