I know this isn't what you asked for but I came accross it in IGI & wondered if it's one of yours.

Maybe you already have it

The Wernham & Simms names caught my eye

Now I shall have to work out what relation they are to me.

FamilyFogey

FamilyFogey Report 19 Mar 2008 16:05

Well perhaps - the 1900 census gives their date of immigration as 1855 - I cant find them on the passenger lists on Ancestry which cover that period.

There doesn't appear to be a marriage for William and Martha in this country.

Marriages Sep 1843
LAMBOURN William Newbury 6 301
WENHAM Diana Newbury 6 301

I wonder if Diana was up for being a mormon and perhaps William thought 'wahey - I can marry Martha too!!!' Maybe Diana felt a bit po'd to become second fiddle to her own daughter!

The US 1890 census was damaged so not much info on there.

It could of course be that William and Martha never officially married - I dont really know what the law was regarding polygamous marriages in the US in the 1850s - as it seems their earlier children were born in Jefferson County, Missouri before they came to Utah.

And very perplexed that I cant find them in 1860 or 1870 in the US censuses. Maybe they were keeping their heads down....

I think John Simms & Martha Wernham may have been Dianna's parents.

Just worked it out George is 2nd cousin 4x removed so that makes Diana the same but in law.
Martha 3rd cousin 3xremoved so that makes William the same but in Law. A bit of useless info!
I do not think I will be intouch as they might want me to be a mormon too1

FamilyFogey

FamilyFogey Report 19 Mar 2008 16:22

Yeah - best keep a lid on it - you might be having to marry someone who already has three other wives who are a wife a sister and daughter.... all of which were cousins to start with....

*head spinning*

Francoise I don't blame you !

I know I would definitely not want to be married to the same man as my mother!

Francoise

Francoise Report 19 Mar 2008 16:29

Yes Jonathan Simms 1758-1841 and Martha Wernham 1767-1848 and married 1785 were Diana's parents. Martha was daughter to George Wernham and Ann Adnams my 5GGParents.
Thank you again.

Yes....Mormons can have multiple marriages especially in Utah.

It is not legal in this country but it is in the US.

It was more popular years ago than today. I wonder why..??
