Jim, that's very helpful re marriage AND clearing up the name - and vindicating my Uncle! The fact that registry 1901 is South Stoneham district parralels this 'other' James Chamberlain (who is a gardener there in 1891) but his dad was also called James, a coachman born in Hampshire! Also baby James was listed as being born in South Stoneham (Hants), and not Ipswich. Which is were I was probably getting my knickers in a twist!

Yes, that's our man, Rutland Belle! Just going to try to work that one through, Jim... thanks so far! :-)

marriage Peter James Chamberlain 1891 Apr-May-Jun Winchester Hampshire
Lucy Macey
I can only find the one Chamberlain born Ipswich. It would seem that James and Peter may be the same man.

Hi I am new to this so please bear with me. I have been led into family research by my uncle, who is in his 80's, and is anxious to trace his family back at least one step further. His name is Peter Chamberlain, and the last concrete record I have is for a James Chamberlain in the 1901 census, where he is a dock worker in Southampton aged 31. The record shows he was born in Ipswich as James but my uncle had always thought his first name was Peter. He tells me James' father was called Robert. (I contacted a Genes Reunited member who kindly allowed me to access their tre, but that led to another blank, unfortunately. There appears to be another James Chamberlain of the same age living in Southampton after 1871, but it can't be him as he was of different parentage and place of birth. I have hit the proverbial brick wall and don't know how to get any further with this. Can anyone please help?
