http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
this is the offical site for certs. cost £7 using the index details.
If you get her fathers name then post on here and we may be able to find him . If you then think it may be one of the birth indexes posted you can ask for a check using fathers name. If it does't match i think they keep £3-£3.50 of the £7

I'm not sure. I dont have any information on her and it's starting to wind me up. my nan said the best person to ask would be her sister but i have no idea how to contact her, havent seen her for years since she lives in america

Who registered your Great Nan's death?
By 1992 the birthplace should be recorded on the certificate.
....if the informant knew that information of course.

did she have the marriage cert?

jansmith Report 18 Apr 2008 08:21

If the marriage index is right then it could be this one.(Could have moved out of London during the war?)
Name: Grace Ernestine Marsh
Year of Registration: 1904
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: St Pancras (1902-1977)
County: Greater London, London
Volume: 1b

There is this as the birth was quite late in March then it could be in the next registration quarter. If you have her fathers name from a marriage cert and we could find someone of that name in this area it might be worth a check on this cert. to see what fathers name is given
Name: Female Marsh
Year of Registration: 1904
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Medway (1837-1941)
County: Kent
Volume: 2a

As soon as I get them I'll post them here. It will be interesting to see what it says on the certificates. Especially after weeks of searching and finding nothing.

Thanks for trying. My nan has just decided to mention tonight that she has the birth certificates of both Grace Gertrude Marsh and Charles Pike (my great-grandparents) and also their marriage certificate so maybe I'll be able to get somewhere with it afterall!

What is on the death cert is what the person registering the birth thought. Even people's children sometimes get it wrong. My inlaws organised an 80th birthday party for my mother-in-law. They didn't believe me when I said she was only 79 (I knew because she was born the same year as my father). Well, she had two 80th birthday parties!!

Having said that, I can't find Grace's birth 10 years either side of 1904. Perhaps her birth wasn't registered (my mother's wasn't and that was 1907) or possibly it was registered under another name or maybe the Gertrude wasn't included in the registration.

JenW Report 12 Apr 2008 15:37

she was 88 when she died which also is shown on the death record

JenW

JenW Report 12 Apr 2008 15:36

my nan told me she was born 21/3/1904 and then i found the death record which had the correct dob on it.
At the moment im managing to trace other peoples families with no problem but im at a bit of a loss with my own

If you get the birth cert it will give Grace's parent's names including her mother's maiden name and then you can look for their marriage.

sorry, just realised we haven't found her birth yet.

DOBs on death certs can be wrong. The day and month are quite often right but the year can be wrong.

Her marriage cert might have her age although it might just say of full age - meaning she was 21 or over.

Thank you. No i havent been able to find the record of it.
Ethel May Pike is my great aunt and Hilda Pike is my nan.
My nan's (Hilda) birthday is 2 Feb 1933 so her mother's maiden name was definitely Marsh.

I'm still struggling to find a proper record of Grace Gertrude Marsh's birth. I found her death record and it said her birthday was 21/3/1904 which is what my nan told me it was but I cant find a record of her birth anywhere
