Dea your right they did steal with him. Sound like a right bunch! No wonder my Nan never told me about him! :)

Hi Michelle,

I don't think George stole FROM the Collins, - I am sure it said he stole WITH them.

I can't get back into the site to check.

By the way Elizabeth was another relative:

Marriages Sep 1890

*** COLLINS William W. Ham 4a 184
Oldrey William W. Ham 4a 184
TOPLEY Ada Agnes W Ham 4a 184
*** Wood Elizabeth Emma W.Ham 4a 184

I wonder what he got up too after all this! I've just read it all properly and it made me laugh. What a character. He was at my Nan's wedding in 1936, it says he was a General Dealer!! Sounds about right!

I've just had a look. I'm glad it wasn't murder! I think my mum will be ok :). Think she guessed. I'll tell her later. I think that means when he stole from the Collins he actually stole from people he was living with as I remember that name on census. My nan never talked about her Dad so I am so pleased to how found out something even if he was a naughty boy!

Meet up soon Jane. I have sent you a message x

Thanks Jane - he was a 'naughty boy' then wasn't he?

I wonder if Michelle will tell her mum?

P.S. - The link to the site doesn't work - can you put an 'e' between the 'l' and 'y' in old bailEy on your post?

Hi Michelle,
I have found some info on our great grandfather please go to www.oldbaileyonline.org. key in george riches and look at points 10 to 14. Im sure its him quite a busy boy!!!!!
I thinks thats why Harry would have been called woods, george would have in in prison when he was born.
Ive posted it on here as I can see other members are also intrested.

Hope all is well
Take care
Jane

Eion thank you I have emailed your daughter.

Dea

Dea Report 30 Apr 2008 12:57

Did you also see the message from Eion on page 1 about someone researching the family?

Looks promising?

Hi,

It is on page 1 of this thread - Glitter has posted the family with Esther visiting her parents on 1901 with a 7 month old George Riches.

That is why I went to look for George Snr and found him in Prison.

I think my great nan had quite a hard life. She may have had a baby in 1901, where did you find that out? Is it Harry? I think he may have been born out of wedlock? in 1898/99. It has to be him. I will definitely send off for the article.

Dea

Dea Report 30 Apr 2008 12:30

I don't think it can be anything too bad.

If it is him (and it does look promising that it is), - It raises a bit of a mystery - Did they have conjugal (spelling?) visits in those days as didn't his wife have a 7 month old baby on 1901?

Maybe he was 'in and out' and in again on 1901?

Must go and 'dig around' again.

I got the Row 59, No 5 from the 1881 census ages ago but have just found it again.

Michelle

Michelle Report 30 Apr 2008 12:26

Do you think he could have been in there more than once? Only if the offence took place in 1897 and he married in 1900 and he was in there in 1901 census, would it be him?

Michelle

Michelle Report 30 Apr 2008 12:23

Thank you everyone. Dea I will send off for the article because I am more than I little curious to know what he did. I won't tell my mum if its something horrid! x

Angela

Angela Report 30 Apr 2008 11:37

I found mine by accident - he was in Broadmoor on the
1881 census - talk about the skeleton in the cupboard - he strangled his baby while he was drunk and then tried to slit his own throat with a blunt razor!

Poor guy rotted in there for near 20 years and was buried in an unmarked grave in Berkshire.

Here's hoping that George's misdemeanor was not on such a grand scale!

Happy hunting.

Thank you Angie - I was hoping it would tell me where the article was from so I could find it.

I think I will leave Michelle to order it if she would like to - after all, he is not my relative, I am just doing a look-up for Michelle.

Hope she does get it though, I am quite curious.

Thanks,

Dea x

P.S. - Think I will go back on that site later and see if I can find any of 'mine' now I know how it works.

HI,

Make a note of the details for Mr Riches.

If you go in to the black sheep index where the alphabetical listings are you will see highlighted in red prices/order form click on it, print off the form fill in the details and send it off with your cheque - they will send you a copy of the clipping - mine took about a week to arrive.

Regard

Angie

Hi Angie,

That's useful - I had a look on the site but couldn't find my way around very well.

I found the entry you mentioned but couldn't work out what to do with it (I am useless on new sites!)

Does it tell you which paper the article is in as I have access to a few online?

Thanks,

Dea x

Hi Michelle,

Check out the following -

http://www.blacksheepindex.co.uk/BSI-ReyRic.pdf

There is a George Riches on there (Salmon Rd, Plaistow age 20) could be your man - whatever offence it was took place in 1897.

I think it costs about £6.00 to send for the newspaper clipping.

Regards

Angie
